TEEN SERVICES SPECIALIST
(Non-exempt)
Part-time
Schedule: Part-time 12 hrs. a week
- The schedule will be alternating between the following: Week one: Friday 2pm-8pm, Saturday 12pm-6pm & Week two: Thursday 3pm-9pm, Friday 2pm-8pm
Under the supervision of the Teen Services Manager, assists library patrons by providing information and readers advisory services and helping to provide learning experiences. The primary audience served is young people in grades 6-12.
Minimum Qualifications (education, experience, and certifications):
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience working with teens in grades 6-12, including in education or in teen engagement (ex. afterschool or extracurricular programs)
- Experience providing in-person customer service

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a public library
- Some college
Preferred Competencies:
- Knowledge of young adult literature
- Knowledge of restorative justice practices and/or other positive approaches to behavior management
- Multilingual skills in English plus another language(s) relevant to the Skokie community
Essential Functions:
- Assists teens in the use of the library and its resources including helping them identify, locate, and retrieve materials based on their interests and information needs
- Provides advisory and basic information services
- Engages, interacts, and builds relationships with teens in the library
- Ensures that rules are consistently followed in the Teen Room
- Reports behavioral and other problems to the supervisor, safety specialist, librarian in charge, or other appropriate staff
- Maintains the tidiness of the Teen Room
- Promotes library services to teens
- Helps to provide learning experiences and programming for teens
- Contributes to merchandising efforts by helping to maintain displays
- Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance
Other Functions:
- May create advisory aids including book lists, reviews, and other materials that promote and engage teens with the library collection
- May serve on library committees
- Performs other related duties as assigned

- Ability to perform office-related functions including extended concentration on a computer and typing capability
- Work may include prolonged sitting, standing, stooping, bending, lifting/moving materials, getting down on the floor, as well as continuous computer use.

- Noise level is generally moderate
- Scheduling may require availability during any library operating hours, including days, evenings, weekends, and occasionally when the library is closed. Although a weekly schedule is established, the needs of the library may require scheduling changes and flexibility.
- Employee required to park in designated area
