Job Description :
- Applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills to deliver high-quality compassionate care to patients and families.
- Assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priority, and collaboratively provides direct care, applies appropriate interventions, and evaluates patient progress.
- Demonstrates skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions appropriate to manage life-threatening and routine emergency situations.
- Utilizes the principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain / discomfort and safety.
- Assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems as appropriate.
- Connects with patient and family during triage. Assigns priority of care in accordance with Triage Standards as outlined in the ESI training.
- Establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, assesses nonverbal communication, and provides frequent updates.
- Conducts primary assessment of critical needs, detects and documents any major deviation from the norm for all age groups within acceptable time frames, and correctly identifies the necessary steps / interventions required.
- Uses direct observation, patient / family interview, EMS report, and data to conduct secondary assessments.
- Assesses the psychosocial needs of each individual, including family dynamics, and documents and reports any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse in all age groups.
- Reassesses the patient to identify response to treatment and / or changes in condition and responds appropriately.
- Encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to accomplish the best possible patient outcome.
- Provides education and delegates tasks and interventions consistent with the individual's education, training, and scope of practice.
- Prepares patient, parent, or family for diagnostic procedures and treatments and makes appropriate referrals for post-emergency care.
- Teaches the patient what is needed for continued care / healing at home, assesses learning styles, and structures sessions to maximize understanding.
- Evaluates retention of key points in education and discharge instruction.
- Focuses on what is most important to the patient / family, acknowledging them as the central focus of all care and services.
- Maintains awareness of the patient's condition throughout the ER visit, updating communication boards and informing patients and families of the process of care.
