What are the responsibilities and job description for the Middle School Assistant Principal (11-months) position at South Glens Falls Central School District?

Reports to:  Principal or designee

Supervises:  Teachers, pupil personnel staff, paraprofessionals/support staff

Purpose of Position:  To utilize leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to promote the educational development of each student. 

 Terms of Employment: 11 month position.  Salary and working conditions in accordance with the agreement between the Superintendent and the South Glens Falls Administrators’ Association.   Performance of this position and its responsibilities will be evaluated annually by the Principal or designee.

Performance Responsibilities:

  1.  Building leadership

  • a. Supports and promotes high standards and expectations for all students and staff for academic performance and responsibility for self and others;
  • b. Supports and maintains an emotionally healthy and physically safe environment conducive to the total educational development of the students and professional development of the staff; provides for emergency situations and assists with the development of Safety Plans;
  • c. Assists with the maintenance of all required building records and reports;
  • d. Assists with the preparation of reports, records, lists and all other paperwork required and/or appropriate to the school’s administration;
  • e. DASA Coordinator;
  • f. District Safety Committee Representative
  • g. Assists with the creation of the Master Schedule and assignment of duties of teachers and support staff;
  • h. Assists with the responsibilities for opening and closing of school procedures;
  • i. Keeps the Principal informed of the school’s activities and problems;
  • j. Responsible for 6-8th grade student management including but not limited to attending dances, discipline, etc.
  • k.Maintain and update the Teacher, Substitute and Student Handbooks;
  • l. Coordinate the supervision of students during arrival and dismissal;

Instructional leadership

  • a. Collaborates with the Principal and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction on instructional best practices, strategies and professional development needs;
  • b. Supports and encourages teacher use of student data from local and state
  • Assessments to improve instruction;
  • c. Supports the implementation of local and state assessments along with developing testing schedules;
  • d. Assists with the development, revision and evaluation of the curriculum including but not limited to serving on curriculum committees;
  • e. Assists with supervising the school’s teaching process through both informal and formal observation and evaluation;
  • f.  Assists with the supervision of all activities and programs that are outgrowths of the school’s curriculum

Personnel and Employee Relations

  • a.  Supervises and evaluates all professional, paraprofessional and support staff attached to the school;
  • b.  Assists with new teacher/employee orientation;
  • c.  Assists with the orientation of newly assigned/hired staff members and assists in their development as appropriate;
  • d.  Assists with the in-service training/professional development provided on superintendent conference days and other required training;
  • e.  Assists in the recruitment, selection and hiring of new staff for the building;
  • f.   Assists with assigning chaperones;
  • g.  Assists with assemblies and concerts including but not limited to coordination of supervision;
  • h.  May assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.

Student/Parent/Community Relations

  • a. Maintains active two-way communications with students, parents, and the community through the use of technology and other media;
  • b. Makes arrangements for special conferences between parents and teachers;
  • c. Oversees student attendance and Schooltool Reporting;

 

 Participates in student recognition events and assemblies;

  • a. Supports after school activities and dances (TBD by activity calendar);
  • b. Acts as a liaison between the school and community, interpreting activities and policies of the school and encouraging community participation in school life;
  • c. 504 Coordinator;
  • d. Coordinates lunchroom supervision;
  • e. Coordinates transition meetings and assists with transition programs;
  • f. Coordinates with guidance department on new student orientation;
  • g.  Administrative liaison for Shared Decision Making.

Other Duties

  • a. Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field;
  • b. Participates and supports the strategic plan and district initiatives;
  • c. Participates in building department meetings, district-level meetings, Board meetings, negotiation meetings, and such other meetings as are required or appropriate;
  • d. Responds to written and oral requests for information;
  • e. Assists with VADIR, DASA, and Civil Rights reporting;
  • f.  Performs other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:  NYS Certification – SAS, SDA, or SBL.

Preferred Requirements:  Evidence of successful administrative experience
