General Description of Position
Under the general direction and supervision of the Associate Dean and Dean of Transportation, the Diesel Ag Equipment Service Technology Instructor is responsible for developing and implementing Diesel Ag Equipment Service Technology program courses. These courses take place in a classroom/laboratory setting as well as an online/laboratory (hybrid) format. The Diesel Ag Equipment Service Technology instructor is responsible for writing course objectives, implementing appropriate teaching strategies, advising students, monitoring and evaluating student progress, and keeping accurate and timely student records. Teaching assignments for this full-time regular position include but are not limited to, various aspects of Agricultural and Mobile Off-Road Equipment repair and maintenance.
Essential Functions
- Provide instruction and develop courses in assigned subject areas.
- Practice and encourage safety.
- Provide instruction to a diverse student population according to the objectives of each course in the Diesel Ag Equipment Service Technology program.
- This instructor will utilize a variety of instructional strategies in the classroom/laboratory that include but are not limited to, lectures, small groups, indoor and outdoor demonstrations, and laboratory activities. Lab activities may include “mock-up” components as well as “live” work on public customer or College-owned vehicles and equipment.
- Prepare and administer student evaluation instruments and maintain accurate student records on attendance, achievement, and progress.
- Remain current in events and developments related to the subject area. Increase and improve personal teaching and subject knowledge through supplemental sources such as in-service activities, conferences, workshops, technical updates, and personal self-study.
- Participate in division and college meetings and committees.
- Participate in program Workforce Leadership Team (WLT) meetings.
- Maintain security of College vehicles, equipment, facilities, and materials.
- Serves as an Academic Advisor for students. Tasks included in this area are: advise students on their academic progress, courses needed for graduation, and division/college policies and procedures; and generally serve as the first line of communication between students and the college staff.
- Develop/Revise Course Curriculum and Educational Materials Develop and/or revise course objectives, content, descriptions, and instructional strategies on approved college curriculum forms. In addition, the instructor will develop, revise, and maintain classroom/laboratory policies, grading structures, and strategies. This instructor will review, evaluate, and recommend textbooks for course use.
- Function as a Member of the Diesel Ag Equipment Service Technology Program, Transportation Division, Instructional Division, and SCC teams.
- Interact with colleagues, students, staff, supervisors, and the public in a manner that will project a positive image of the program and the College and which promotes and facilitates instructional services such as recruitment, placement, and orientation as assigned. This includes support of SCC Policies, Goals, and Strategic Plans.
- Perform other functions related to teaching assignments.
- Maintain and upgrade the Diesel Technology classroom/laboratory instructional facilities and equipment. Responsible for verifying the maintenance of facilities and equipment to ensure that it is kept in safe and proper working order for student use.
- Individualized Development Plan (New Instructors): Each new instructor will develop an individualized development plan in cooperation with the Vice President of Instruction or his/her designee.
- Professional Development: Faculty should work with their immediate supervisor to develop an annual professional development and improvement plan.

Marginal Functions
- Operate and utilize appropriate audio-visual equipment, computers, and learning management system(s) as part of the teaching process including PowerPoint, Microsoft Office products, Canvas, etc.
- Provide information and data that will assist in the preparation of budgets, course schedules, vehicle condition reports, and other required reports.
- Serve as a substitute instructor within the Transportation division when needed as assigned by the Associate Dean or Dean.
- Serve as a technical advisor from the Diesel Ag Equipment Service Technology Program for assisting other programs at the College.
- May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
- Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
- Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Current knowledge of, and work experience in, the Diesel Ag Equipment Service Technology field. This will include the following: heating/air conditioning; electrical/electronic systems & components; diesel & gasoline engines; hydraulic/hydrostatic systems & components; power train systems & components; diesel & gasoline fuel systems & components; and seeding & planting, harvesting, tillage, and precision agriculture equipment.
- Be able to operate the tools, equipment, and diagnostic equipment used in modern Diesel Ag Equipment Systems.
- Be able to demonstrate all types of processes required of a Diesel Ag Equipment Service technician for the particular courses assigned to teach.
- Ability to apply and demonstrate effective communication skills.
- Ability to develop and incorporate a variety of teaching strategies and techniques in the classroom/laboratory.
- Ability to devise and utilize appropriate evaluation methods for classroom/laboratory use.
- Be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time (one to three hours) when supervising lab work and during class times (one to three hours).
- Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies up to forty (40) pounds from the floor to five (5) feet high.
- Ability to step up onto, climb over, and into tractors, combines, and other equipment to demonstrate or inspect, and evaluate students’ work.
- Ability and experience in the safe operation of tractors, combines, and consumer products.
- Ability to safely drive a vehicle to meet travel requirements for coordination of the cooperative education and possess a valid driver’s license.
- Possess a working knowledge of the Hazard Communication Standard/Hazard and Chemical Right-to-Know laws and regulations.
- Ability to communicate effectively both in writing, in person, and on the phone.
- Ability to use basic computer skills.

Minimum Qualifications
- Associate Degree in a Diesel Technology or related field plus current OEM Agriculture or Construction Equipment Master Certification*, or Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
- Tested Experience by examination during the interview process may be substituted for OEM Agriculture or Construction Equipment Master Certification. Such examination will include knowledge and/or physical demonstration of competence in one or more areas of ag equipment diagnosis and repair.
Desired Qualifications
- Previous teaching experience.
- Additional post-secondary training or degree in a mechanized Agriculture or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Agriculture or Heavy Equipment manufacturer or industry-recognized training certifications.
Salary
$54,300 per year
Benefits
SCC BEN Dollars – Eligible Employees: Full-time status. Regular employees with an FTE of 0.75 or greater will be eligible for SCC Ben Dollars. All employees will be required to elect a health insurance option. If the cost of insurance coverage selected by an employee exceeds the SCC Ben Dollars available, all additional costs will be withheld from the employee’s paycheck. Any SCC Ben Dollars that the employee does not elect to use for the purchase of dependent health and dental insurance will be paid to the employee in cash at $0.93 per $1.00 benefit dollar. All amounts paid are subject to withholding for income and employment taxes, but not subject to the College’s contribution toward the Retirement Savings Plan – Group Retirement Account (GRA).
Schedule
This is a full-time regular position with an implied 40-hour work week, based on a 175-day work calendar. Teaching assignments for this position are scheduled and approved by the College, between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday based on the instructional work calendar. Scheduled special activities, emergencies, or temporary schedule changes may require hours outside of the regular workday or workweek.
