The Southern Environmental Law Center is seeking a new Recruitment Manager in either our Charlottesville, VA or Chapel Hill, NC offices. This individual will join our Human Resources team and report to SELC’s Director of Human Resources. The Recruitment Manager will collaborate with stakeholders across the organization to execute and refine full lifecycle recruiting processes, getting the opportunity to have a direct impact on the diversity of talent joining SELC. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successfully managing full lifecycle recruitment processes across various positions, showcasing their proficiency in sourcing, screening, and selecting top talent. With a strong understanding of recruitment best practices, techniques, and technologies, they possess excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills, enabling them to foster positive relationships with candidates, stakeholders, and team members. Their adeptness at prioritizing tasks and managing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment ensures efficiency and effectiveness in achieving recruitment goals.


SELC has a hybrid work model that offers employees the flexibility to work remotely up to two days per week. This is a full-time, exempt position. Employment is contingent on successful completion of a criminal background check.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategic recruitment plans aligned with the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Lead full lifecycle recruitment processes, in partnership with hiring supervisors, including sourcing, screening, interviewing, and selecting qualified candidates for various operations departments within the organization. This includes document management, evaluations completion, and candidate communication.
  • Conduct additional targeting recruiting efforts through online searches, networking, and relationship building with peer organizations.
  • Partner with HR Director and Legal Recruitment Manager to develop and deliver training for interview teams to reduce bias and ensure consistency in process across candidates and departments.
  • Administer and manage all applicant tracking system (ATS) processes. This includes monitoring user profiles to ensure confidentiality, creating custom reports, processing system updates, and customizing fields to mirror our evolving process. As changes occur, host regular training sessions for new staff involved in hiring and existing teams who need a refresh.
  • Partner with the Legal Recruitment Manager to create scalable hiring processes that support the organizational goal of increased diversity in our applicant pools and staff demographics. This includes documented processes and clear communication to internal and external audiences.
  • Manage relationships with external recruitment agencies, job boards, and other vendors to augment talent acquisition efforts as needed. Limited responsibility for contract and invoice management.
  • Proactively seek out opportunities to streamline and optimize recruitment processes, equity, systems, and tools to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.


Required Qualifications:

  • 5 years in high volume full-lifecycle internal recruitment environment.
  • Comfort with up to 10 open requisitions at a time in a fast-paced matrixed organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage daily hiring operations and long-term strategic projects.
  • Excellent organizational and communications skills.
  • Ability to work in both virtual and in-person environments.
  • Wide breadth of recruitment experience with a diversity of skill sets/positions.
  • Demonstrated comfort with technology and proficiency with ATS administration, maintenance and improvements. Ability to train small groups and internal hiring teams.
  • Experience utilizing LinkedIn Recruiter to support recruiting efforts.
  • Strong knowledge of common human resources practices, employment laws and/or government compliance regulations that affect recruitment.
  • Must have the ability to travel within the SELC region to attend occasional career fairs and an annual all-staff retreat.
  • A genuine interest in and commitment to helping SELC create and foster a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace. You engage in ongoing learning and are eager to contribute to our organizational efforts in this area.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Recruitment management experience at a nonprofit organization.
  • Recruitment experience at a law firm, ideally supporting Operations and Administration positions.

Compensation & Benefits:

SELC offers salaries competitive with other leading environmental nonprofits nationally and provides an excellent benefits package. The starting salary range for this position is $80,000- $96,000 commensurate with experience. For more details about our benefits package, please visit our Careers page.


SELC is a PSLF (Public Service Loan Forgiveness) eligible employer.


SELC will also provide relocation reimbursement for those relocating for an SELC position, up to a specific dollar amount and contingent on the move being at least 50 miles from the current primary address.
