Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) invites nominations and applications for the Director of the University Core Curriculum (UCC). This administrative/professional appointment reports to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs with a working report to the Associate Provost for Academic Programs. The position FTE during the academic year and summer are negotiable; however, it is expected that at least 0.50 FTE effort will be necessary for the workload associated with just maintaining current operations. The 1.0 FTE monthly salary is $10,500.
This leadership role is an opportunity for a dynamic, creative individual to critically evaluate the core curricula and lead changes that enhance the student experience, such as incorporating more opportunities for understanding the ethical use of technology and digital information, emphasizing skills for the future workforce, and prioritizing student well-being and inclusivity.
With support from two university-wide committees, the Director oversees the University Core Curriculum and the implementation of curricular policies as set by the Provost and Faculty Senate. The Director ensures the core curriculum aligns with the values set forth in SIU’s mission to embrace a unique tradition of access and opportunity, inclusive excellence, innovation in research and creativity, and outstanding teaching focused on nurturing student success.
Examples of Duties
In alignment with the UCC Operating Paper, the Director of the University Core Curriculum is responsible for leading the development, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of the core curriculum.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, assessment, and continuous improvement of the university’s core curriculum.
- Develop and maintain assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of the core curriculum in achieving desired learning outcomes.
- Collaborate with academic departments to ensure the integration of interdisciplinary, high-impact learning experiences within the core curriculum.
- Serve as a primary resource for faculty regarding core curriculum policies, assessment practices, and course design.
- Participate in accreditation processes and ensure compliance with relevant regional and professional standards.
- Stay informed about best practices, trends, and research in core curriculum development and academic innovations.
- Oversee the Core Curriculum Executive Council (CCEC) and the Core Curriculum Advisory Representatives (CCAR) to implement and maintain the University Core Curriculum.
- Represent the CCEC and the CCAR to the Faculty Senate; specifically, carry policy recommendations and supporting discussion to the UEPC.
- Serve as an ex-officio member of the UEPC.
- Represent SIUC on the statewide IBHE Articulation Initiative Panel (Humanities).
- Inform Deans and Directors about policy items and other matters such as may pertain to their colleges.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Applicants must be tenured associate professors in an academic unit at SIU Carbondale.
- Applicants must have experience in curricular or program development.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to the University’s diversity and inclusion missions.
- Ability to develop and sustain productive collegial relationships and to effectively articulate the program’s mission to students, faculty, alumni, external funding agencies, and other decision-making bodies.
