Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Institute for Community Justice and Racial Equity (ICJRE) strives to achieve equity, racial justice, and positive transformational change for southwestern Illinois’ historically marginalized communities. In partnership with the largest child advocacy organization in the United States, the Children’s Defense Fund, the ICJRE sponsors a CDF Freedom Schools® program. The CDF Freedom Schools® model provides meaningful engagement opportunities for our campus community by bringing together SIUE faculty, staff, and students with children, families, and community volunteers in order to impact educational equity.
As a Servant Leader Intern, you will serve as a positive role model for scholars, ensuring their safety and maintaining a professional environment. Key responsibilities include setting up, managing, and breaking down classroom space according to organizational standards, and engaging a maximum of 10 scholars per class in the Integrated Reading Curriculum. You will also facilitate workshops and activities, attend required training sessions in Knoxville, TN, and collaborate with site staff to implement program components effectively. Additionally, you'll co-facilitate parent and community engagement events.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
Extra Help job listings typically close 24 hours after the opening date, unless specified in the closing date. Extra Help employees are appointed to fulfill casual or emergent needs within the university. The amount of time for which services are needed is not usually predictable and payment for work performed is on an hourly basis and based on actual hours worked. Workdays and hours may vary according to departmental requirements. Extra Help employees do not receive SIUE benefits, holiday pay or paid sick or vacation leave.
Extra Help employees are required by State Universities Civil Service System rules to take a 30-calendar-day break after working 900 hours. At the end of the 30 days, you may begin another 900-hour employment cycle in a new position if available. Working Extra Help will in no way affect any other employment opportunities with SIUE, including your position on and Civil Service register. There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
- Must have completed at least one year of college in good academic standing by start of program on June 16th
- Must have completed coursework in humanities, social sciences, social work, or education.
- Ability to motivate others and work as part of an intergenerational team.
- Must have attended an SIUE Freedom School Information Session: ( Will be hosted in February, dates and on-campus location TBA)
- Solid commitment to the success and well-being of children.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Exhibit positive behavior and attitude, modeling a mature and professional demeanor.
- Must be currently enrolled as a student at SIUE or a recent graduate of SIUE.
- Must have previous work or volunteer experience in youth programming or under-resourced communities.
