POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The primary purpose of the Pathways for Native Educators Coordinator (PNEC) is to build a pipeline into teaching for Native educators. A secondary focus of the PNEC will also assist in building pathways for SOU behavioral health programs.

The PNEC will work in coordination with the SOU Native Nations Liaison to build relationships with Tribal Partners and Indigenous Oregonians. The PNEC will be responsible for publicizing all of the SOU programs that lead to educator licensure or behavioral health degrees; especially those that are available remotely. The PNEC will also visit schools, school districts and community colleges to meet with prospective students, school administrators, as well as faculty and staff.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education or closely related field.
  • Experience with Oregon Teacher Licensure (TSPC) requirements and regulations can be used to offset the educational background requirement.
  • Experience working with Tribal entities Ability to demonstrate knowledge of and/or experience with Tribal history, politics, law, and Tribal sovereignty.
  • One year of experience basic grant management skills including budget, outcome tracking, grant writing and report writing

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience working with Oregon Tribal entities.
  • Ability to demonstrate significant experience 3 years working with Tribal partners.
  • Experience as licensed teacher in Oregon, public, K-12 schools.
  • Experience as a principal investigator on a grant grant writing experience

Essential Functions

Duties - The following examples are typical work activities that are meant to illustrate the general range of work functions and are not meant to be all-inclusive or restrictive:

(40%) Duties Include

  • Supporting and understanding programmatic systems for Ed licensure programs.
  • Supporting the development of programmatic systems and maintaining programmatic details for behavioral health programs.
  • Assisting with fiscal planning and tracking spending progress, monitoring activities for Ed Equity grant alignment.
  • Crafting and sending timely programmatic communications to prospective and current students.

(40%) Duties Include

  • Meeting with local and regional Tribal partners.
  • Meeting with local and regional schools, school districts, educational service districts and community colleges to promote SOU education pathways to students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Planning events and professional development workshops and advising non-degree-seeking students on academic credit options, including potential education and behavioral health pathways, and assisting them in navigating the University systems and policies.

(10%) Duties Include

  • Liaising with Chair, Program Coordinators and licensure staff in SOU’s Education Department and behavioral health programs.
  • Assisting in the development of program marketing and planning materials.

(10%) Duties Include

  • Assisting students with SOU onboarding processes including applications, financial aid, course registration.
  • Designing, maintaining, and collecting outcome data for grant reporting.
  • Participating in writing project summaries and reports.

  • Excellent communication skills; demonstrated ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism to effectively handle a broad range of sensitive interpersonal situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and consistently apply a wide variety of complex policies and procedures where specific guidelines may not always exist.
  • Expressed ability to work with frequent changes in policies and procedures, under pressure of deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively assess work operations and anticipate potential problems; ability to develop and implement strategies for preventing/resolving problems.
  • Great ability to effectively perform work of a highly sensitive and confidential nature that requires access to information. Must be able to exercise sound judgment and discretion, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Takes initiative in independently planning, organizing, and performing work assignments within broadly defined parameters
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high level of productivity and accuracy/attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the demonstrated ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, social media platforms, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Willingness to and work effectively in a heavily bureaucratic environment which requires regular interaction with a number of levels within the organization and multiple outside agencies.
  • Working knowledge or ability to quickly learn, university infrastructure, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
  • Cultural competence, particularly, knowledge of indigenous cultures.
  • Creative problem solving.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to travel long distances.
  • Interact with others in-person, via phone and email.

Special Conditions

  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
  • This position classification has been defined as exempt and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
  • The person holding this position is considered a mandatory reporter under the Oregon Revised Statutes and is required to comply with the requirements set forth by the Oregon Department of Human Services.
  • This position is grant funded and renewal of appointment is contingent upon continued funding. When a grant experiences a loss in funding, employees whose appointments are funded by that grant may be terminated without notice.

Today, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon (https://www.grandronde.org) and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians (https://www.ctsi.nsn.us/) are living descendants of the Takelma, Shasta, and Latgawa peoples of this area.
