What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Technician position at Southwest Gas Corporation?
The Engineering Technician prepares cost estimates and designs drawings for the fabrication and installation of gas distribution and transmission facilities; may direct other employees or contractors as assigned; may perform and coordinate compliance related activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires experience and training as a GIS Specialist, Construction Technician or equivalent engineering related classification or experience and training in the natural gas construction field.
This position must have knowledge of general construction practices, engineering standards, federal / state pipeline safety regulations; fundamentals of land surveying, soil structure and conditions; use of office equipment such as reproduction machines, calculators, personal computers, etc.; PC software programs including spreadsheets, word processing, and AutoCAD; advanced drafting practices and skills; use of engineering filing procedures and record keeping. This position must also be able to interact effectively with outside agencies and internal departments.
TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Maintain working technical proficiency on FOMS, FieldSmart, AutoCAD, Excel, and other software applications as needed
- Prepare and / or coordinate construction design drawings and cost estimates
- Use Company engineering and operation standards to aid in the design of basic and comprehensive facility installations
- Assist department management in investigation and research of complex projects
- Visualize and analyze complex construction projects from start to completion
- Provide work guidance to lower classifications or contractors as appropriate
- Train others as required
- May prepare and conduct training for outside agencies
- Provide assistance to others as needed
- Perform field visits
- May attend utility coordination meetings held by governmental agencies
- Design, estimate and prepare contract bid documents for projects
- May request and / or negotiate grant of easements
- May research and write easement and right-of-way proposals for Company facilities
- May coordinate franchise jobs involving design, revision, replacement or relocation of Company facilities
- Review and understand complex design drawings and as-builts
- Utility conflict review and resolution
- Prepare and review data reports
- Prepare MAOP certifications
- Facilitate leak survey as needed
- Perform line locating as needed
- Collect payments in the field for main or service relocation
- Assist with duties needed in the permitting process
- Perform duties in a manner that is in compliance with Company, local, state and federal regulations, safety and emergency practices and procedures
- Perform and coordinate compliance related activities
- Promote good public relations
- May provide support during emergency incidents and assist in the record research and system action plan
- Interact effectively and negotiate with outside agencies and internal departments
- Perform compliance quality control checks and reviews
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Regular and predictable attendance is a condition of employment and is an essential function of the job
