Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate’s degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.
Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking an individual to serve as Administrative Assistant for the Workforce and Continuing Education Division. This position is the first point of contact for the Division and provides administrative and clerical support and works directly with students, faculty, and staff. This position will receive direct phone calls, emails, and other correspondence and ensure follow-up in a responsible time and will also be responsible for entry of training curriculum into WES, WES interface updates, tracking grants, reporting on training completed, assisting participates with class registration, and development and circulation of outreach materials and outreach efforts. This position will also assist the Workforce team as needed on various tasks.
Additional job duties include but are not limited to:
- preparing and maintaining class and faculty schedules, division and grant budgets, and adjunct contracts;
- preparing various reports;
- coordinating special events;
- supervising assigned student workers;
- assisting students interested or enrolled in noncredit workforce training with career and educational planning services, program admissions, financial aid, and successful training/credential completion;
- working closely with students before, during, and after their training and credentialing programs to help college workforce divisions achieve their goals related to Complete 2021 and the Workforce Credentials Grant program
- responding to internal and external requests for information
- effective problem-solving skills, listening, and providing assistance to various groups within the college setting will be a key component to this position;
- an understanding of and a commitment to the community college mission and vision.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Must have the ability to build relationships and provide excellent coaching services to students pursuing short-term workforce training as well as strong recordkeeping skills;
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and perform basic mathematical functions;
- Must possess excellent communication skills (both orally and written) and excellent interpersonal skills;
- Ability to collaborate with community college, workforce partners, and employers;
- Office management and clerical experience required with proficient usage of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access;
- Candidate must maintain confidentiality and be able to work with a various groups of students;
- Familiarity with budgeting processes including tracking expenses
- Experience using PeopleSoft
- Prior experience in a higher education setting
