Specific Gravity is an elevated jewelry experience for the design enthusiast and art appreciator. Our selection offers a diverse range of styles, materials, and processes made by some of the most distinctive voices in the NYC jewelry scene. Featuring one of a kind and hand made production pieces and objects, our shop supports the Brooklyn Metal Works studios with an emphasis on local manufacturing and responsible jewelry practices. We specialize in building relationships between our artists and clients in the creation of custom pieces for truly special occasions.
Brooklyn Metal Works is a metal art studio that offers professional studio space for the development of work in the metalsmithing field, as well as offering concept based classes and gallery space to promote artists, designers and makers.
We are a small team of innovative professionals bridging the gap between Brooklyn Metal Works, our community of artists, and the consumer. We aim to uplift and provide encouragement for each artist and their work, creating an approachable space for customers and providing personable assistance throughout the shopping experience.
OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
We are looking for an experienced retail Jewelry Store Manager to join us. As manager you are responsible for the day to day operations for the store, overseeing store sales, training and scheduling staff, communicating with artists, developing store processes and procedures, and overall growth of the business. Effective managers are able to encourage and support their teams and build their capabilities to achieve store goals.
Our ideal manager has extensive jewelry knowledge and is a detail oriented person with a love of creating personal shopping experiences. We appreciate strong visual merchandising skills with a curatorial vision to showcase the voices of the artists we represent.
Our approach to sales is providing expert knowledge on the artists and their work. We have a true interest in giving our customers an opportunity to engage in this understanding to build appreciation. Genuine enthusiasm for this perspective is valued.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Effectively communicate with, develop, and coach store staff in a supportive and encouraging way
- Create and implement training strategies for new employees
- Maintain Shopify website
- Uphold policies, maintain store operations and continue to learn about our products
- Manage custom orders and repairs
- Communicate with employees any updates and changes to products or policies and any other store notices
- Review and plan business objectives to meet sales goals
- Partner with artists and plan and market in store events
QUALIFICATIONS: to be successful in this role, you need
- Jewelry retail leadership experience required
- Experience leading a team of 2-5 store employees
- Experience in using Google Office Suite (docs, sheets, calendar)
- Experience in using Shopify and maintaining various web based applications
- Experience in creating/managing staff schedules
- Strong sense of initiative, self-motivated, and goal-oriented
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Experience in customer services, sales and clienteling
- Knowledge of fine metals, diamonds and gemstones, and custom design
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
- Experience with building and maintaining strong relationships with customers
- Ability to influence and drive results through others
- Adaptable, resourceful, with an ability to prioritize during busy times
- Present ideas and recommendations in a professional and organized manner
- Social Media familiarity and photography background a plus
- Familiarity with InDesign, Photoshop, or Canva
- Interest in jewelry and fashion history a plus
Specific Gravity hours of operation are Wednesday - Sunday 11am - 7pm. Ability to work evenings and weekends is required. Our December schedule will extend our operating days and hours. We are closed on all holiday Mondays, July 4th, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day, as well as for Winter Break which is the first week of January.
