Fleet Technician B
POSITION SUMMARY
As a Mechanic, you will be responsible for performing preventive and corrective maintenance on fleet vehicles; including but not limited to Truck Tractor, Trucks, Refrigerated Trailers and other Fleet vehicles. As a Mechanic you will be experienced and aware of the latest automotive technologies and be a persistent problem solver.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform the basic tasks of; performing routine Preventative Maintenance (PM’s) for all Fleet Vehicles.
- Inspect, analyze, troubleshoot, diagnose and perform repairs for heavy duty truck tractors, trucks, trailers and reefer units.
- Disassembly, repair and reassembly of heavy truck and trailer components; including but not limited to; diesel engines, transmissions, axles and any other components or systems.
- Preform mobile fleet repairs; either on SGC property or while performing emergency roadside repairs, utilizing a fleet mobile repair vehicle.
- Cleaning up assigned work area after each job.
- Washing or fueling of trucks as required.
- Basic facility repairs and company tool repairs as required.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment at all times, reporting any safety concerns or un-safe tool conditions to supervisor.
- Driving of tractor/trailers and/or trucks for purposes of test drives and/or return of vehicles to various facilities.
- Properly using and maintaining company tools while performing repairs and when not familiar with operations asking for instruction/direction from a supervisor.
- Must be able to work overtime when needed.
- Must provide all hand tools and lockable tool boxes required to perform the essential duties and responsibilities described.
- All other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education / Licensure:
- High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Minimum of 1 years of related experience
- Class A CDL license is preferred. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL within 6 months from date of hire.
- Must meet the medical requirements of the DOT.
- Ability to comply with EPA and OSHA regulation as pertaining to the shop and fleet.
- Ability to read and understand technical service manuals.
- Excellent communication skills; ability to communicate with co-workers and drivers with demonstrated teamwork skills.
- Ability to adapt to changing organizational and operational needs.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.
- Ability to operate and interpret industry standard diagnostic software for heavy duty trucks, tractors and trailers.
- Ability to work any schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Successful candidate must have a satisfactory post-offer Medical Review and must pass a pre-employment criminal background check. Candidate must meet the requirements of the full job description as stated throughout the duration of employment with SGC.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Physical Demands of Mechanic
- Hand and finger dexterity: Frequently have to grasp heavy parts and maneuver them into place. Ability to support the part while they tighten screws or fit another part into place. Some parts and equipment require very precise adjustments, or the part may go into an area that is too small for the hand, so mechanics need good coordination between the thumb and forefinger.
- Vision: Must have sufficient vision to make out small details. Normal color vision is also important, especially when working on electrical system or operating electronic testing equipment.
- Hearing: Ability to differentiate between sounds or locate the source of an unusual noise.
- Steady Hands: The job requires holding one or both arms steady while working on a vehicle, sometimes for several minutes. Mechanics need the strength to keep their hands steady even if their arms are taxed.
- Flexibility: Ability to maneuver body into unusual position to get at hard-to-reach parts and frequent stretching, bending, reaching and twisting.
- Strength: Ability to lift 25-50 lbs. frequently.
- Oral Communication: Ability to speak with internal customers to determine the nature of the problem or to explain the work performed. Ability to discuss work with other mechanics or supervisors. Ability to make him/herself understood as well as be able to understand what others are saying.
- Critical Thinking: Ability to think logically to follow a chain until a solution is found and be able to apply basic reasoning skills to determine the advantages and disadvantages of a course of action, such as repairing a part rather than replacing it.
- Paying Attention to Details: Ability to follow directions and pay attention to detail.
- Focused on Safety: A diesel mechanic works with a variety of potentially harmful substances, and much of the equipment can pose dangers if not handled properly. Must be safety conscious and be willing to follow all safety rules at all times to protect themselves, their coworkers and their customers.
- Mechanical Aptitude and Ability: Ability to understand the basic principles of mechanics.
