The St. Louis County Jail Division (located in Northern Minnesota) hires permanent full-time Correctional Officers. These positions entail shift work (meaning days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays). There are premiums for hours worked in the evening and night along with premiums for working on the contracted holidays. No prior training in corrections is necessary, we train all new hires in our own academy right in the jail.
Routine work maintaining the security and safety of staff and inmates while in legal custody.
The salary range reflected above is the normal hiring range for 2025. The full salary range, including longevity pay, is $27.45 - $39.04 per hour.
This position is part of the Jail Corrections Officers contract represented by the Local 1934 of AFSCME.An employee in this class is responsible for monitoring and directing the day-to-day activities of the inmates, according to State and local policies and procedures. Duties include processing admissions and releases; maintaining security; directing inmates; assisting with medical services; documenting jail records; submitting reports as required; and operating computers and other electronic devices, fire and life safety equipment, security equipment and other jail related equipment as necessary. The employee is also responsible for the custody and care of the inmates while transporting them to and from their places of custody and confinement. The work is performed under the direction of assigned supervisory staff.These work environment factors are general in nature and may vary depending on the specific position being filled. CONSTANT: Lifting/carrying and push/pull up to 5 lbs; balance; hand coordination; forward reaching (up to 44" from the floor); sit; standing/walking (on concrete floors up to 5 miles); taste/smell; hearing: close proximity (1-5 ft) and distance (up to 20 ft); vision: near, midrange and far vision; color vision; depth perception; field of vision; and shift work. FREQUENT: Push/pull up to 35 lbs; rotate trunk; sitting with positional changes; talk/speak; works around others; clients with behavior challenges; extended day; and work inside. OCCASIONAL: Lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds; climbing/descending steps (a minimum of 672 steps/maximum of 1550 steps; 96 steps in one rotation); squatting/kneeling; stoop/bend; works alone; customer/public contact; drive; and exposure to blood-borne pathogens. RARE: Lifting/carrying up to 60 lbs (2 person); crouch/squat; elevated work; forward reaching (overhead up to 81" from the floor); restrain inmates; running (300 feet).
