What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utilities Mechanic position at St. Mary's County Metropolitan Commission?
Performspreventiveandcorrectivemaintenanceonall equipment associated with the water stations and distribution systems. Operates and documents the performance of the water treatment and distributions systems throughout St. Mary’s County. Ensures public safety and compliance with regulations. Position reports to the Water Superintendent.
- Maintains and repairs equipment required to treat and distribute water to the distribution system; troubleshoots and performs preventive and corrective maintenance on all equipment
- Maintains a variety of operational and maintenance logs, reports, and other forms using designated computer programs
- Disassemble, rebuild and reassemble motors, valves, pumps, gearboxes, etc. to rehabilitate equipment. Performs quality control on equipment after rebuild is complete
- Performs required electrical work in conjunction with mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance checks (i.e. connects/disconnects wires, troubleshoots and performs maintenance on minor pump control problems)
- Requests the purchase of parts, equipment and services needed to perform repairs
- Completes a variety of operational and maintenance logs, reports required for equipment history files and inventory controls on repair parts. Documents all preventive and corrective work performed
- Monitors, troubleshoots and maintains SCADA equipment that is assigned to the water system
- Performs duties as an operator when required to include station checks, water sampling and standby
- Operates and maintains motor vehicles, farm, and construction and lawn maintenance equipment
- Performs minor welding and cutting work to complete repairs and fabricate parts for bracing and repairs as required
- Must maintain full certification status of classes required by the Certification Board to maintain required license
- Ability to wear appropriate PPE for confined space entry including respiratory gear
- Performs any other duties or assignments that are determined to be necessary for continuous and safe operation of MetCom’s facilities
Training and/or Education:
High school diploma or G.E.D. and two or more years of job-related experience
Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience in water treatment and distribution field
Licenses or Certificates:
- Class 2 Water Treatment and MDE Water Sampler Certification
- Must possess a valid Maryland driver’s license, Class C
- Temporary Traffic Control Manager Certification desired

Work requires constant physical effort in the handling of heavy tools, equipment, or materials of 60pounds or more.
Unusual Demands:
Work environmentinvolveshighriskswithexposuretopotentiallydangeroussituationsor unusual environmental stress, which require a range of safety and other precautions,e.g., aggressive human behavior, extreme outdoor weather conditions, confined workspace, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled the ability to climb using ladder at heights that may exceed 15 feet.
Salary : $53,352 - $81,309
