Modern Railway Systems is seeking a Sr. Estimator to manage and prepare cost estimates for transit construction projects, including Train Control, Platform and Wayside Communications, Head-End Systems, Overhead Catenary, Traction Power Substation, duct bank and systemwide electrical systems. You will support the estimating process for all types of procurements: low-bid, CM/GC, design-build and others as necessary. The position will be working as part of a supportive and collaborative team including all essential elements and steps necessary for a successful bid; receiving and reviewing bid documents; assigning and assuming responsibilities for estimate assembly; from Bid Package to Bid and beyond as needed for effective and efficient project start up on awarded projects.
Successful candidates will be leading estimating processes and supporting others on the team who are also leading estimating processes for various other pursuits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Leading and/or working as part of a Team in a coordinated effort
- Preparation of cost estimates for both hard-money and proposal bidding, utilizing Estimating Software (currently HCSS HeavyBid), analyzing, and establishing means, methods, production rates, and schedules.
- Preparation of cost estimates for both detailed bid estimates and rough-order-of-magnitude proposal bidding.
- Training of Junior Estimators
- Preparation of sketches, illustrations, and composites for use in estimate preparation and review.
- Organization and review of plans, specifications, and other technical documents.
- Preparation of quantity take-offs from plans and specifications utilizing various means, including Bluebeam, Microsoft Excel, and Google Earth.
- Development of estimating bills of material based on plans, specifications, and past knowledge.
- Analysis and establishment of means, methods, production rates, and schedules.
- Utilize Microsoft Excel and HCSS HeavyBid to develop, analyze, and summarize direct and indirect costs.
- Coordination with other estimators, engineers, project managers, consultants, partners, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Presentation of cost estimates/proposals before in-house management and/or joint venture partners.
- Preparation of subcontractor and supplier quote request packages, communication with subcontractors and suppliers, and collection, review, and analysis of received quotes.
- Training of others within the organization.
- Will require limited travel for site visits, project meetings, and professional development.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Years of estimating experience: 10 or combination of equivalent of rail systems industry experience and estimating
- Ideally will have worked in Project Management, Field Engineer or Superintendent position(s) with Systems Transit and Transportation projects
- Four-year degree in engineering, construction management, or construction-related course of study from an accredited school or equivalent combination of education, technical training, and/or related experience with a systems or electrical contractor or in a comparable industry.
- Knowledge of plan reading and interpretation, quantity takeoff, and strong Microsoft Excel skills are a must.
- Understanding of construction means, methods, productions, scheduling, and common sense are a must.
- Ability to be self-motivated, employ critical-thinking, and be able to speak up in meetings to provide direction and solutions.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical team members.
- Knowledge of estimating software, such as HCSS HeavyBid.
- Familiarity with transit power systems (Overhead Catenary, Third-Rail, Traction Power Substations)
Additional Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project Scheduling software, Microsoft PowerPoint, Bluebeam, and/or HCSS HeavyBid software are pluses.
- Experience in Light Rail, Commuter Rail, Streetcar, or other transit systems is also a plus.
- Strong technical understanding or experience installing and testing transit power systems (Overhead Catenary, Third-Rail, Traction Power Substations).
