This position can be filled in Fairbanks, Anchorage, or Juneau and can be filled at the Engineering Assistant 1, 2, or 3 depending on qualifications. Salary is dependent on level and location.

What You Will Be Doing: 

As an Engineer in the Project Management Office, you will play a crucial role in supporting the successful delivery of transportation projects across Alaska. This flexible position offers opportunities for growth as you advance your skills in project management, engineering analysis, and stakeholder engagement.

  • At the Engineering Assistant 1 level, you will assist in conducting reviews of project delivery plans, specifications, and feasibility studies to ensure compliance with DOT&PF standards and regulatory requirements. You will support project planning efforts, assist with documentation for audits, and contribute to technical reports under direct supervision.
  • At the Engineering Assistant 2, you will take on greater responsibility by independently evaluating project delivery plans for accuracy. You will assist project managers with scheduling, risk assessment, and process improvements to enhance project efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • At the Engineering Assistant 3 level, you will manage complex project tasks independently, including conducting detailed Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) reviews, monitoring project performance using key performance indicators (KPIs), and providing recommendations for improving project outcomes. You will also collaborate with stakeholders, contractors, and public entities to address technical challenges, promote transparency, and support project objectives. To qualify the applicant must have a current Project Management Professional (PMP) certification through the Project Management Institute (PMI)®.

Engineering Assistant 1:
Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.

Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

Special Note:
An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.

Engineering-In-Training or Flex Engineering Assistant 1/Engineering Assistant 2 positions will be identified by the employing department.

Engineering Assistant 2:
Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
AND
One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:
Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:
Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

Special Note:
The employing department will identify Engineering-In-Training (EIT) positions.
Transcripts which indicate the credit hours earned for the specific coursework may be requested at the time of interview or prior.

Engineering Assistant 3:
Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitutions:
Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.

Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
 This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Engineering Assistant 1/2/3, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired atIf filled at Level 1 or 2, promotion to the Level 2 or 3 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.  
 

DRIVER’S LICENSE REQUIREMENT

This position requires a Valid Alaska Driver's License. Proof of licensure will be required prior to reporting to duty.
