The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Highways and Aviation is looking for a Maintenance Specialist, Traffic Cntrl & Elec. Sys, Journey 2 Lead to help us 

Keep Alaska Moving!

 



What you will be doing:

  • Maintenance & Repair: Repair and maintain electronic traffic control systems, signal systems, and highway illumination systems to ensure public safety.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance on various Econolite traffic control systems and state highway illumination systems using specialized tools.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve issues with traffic signals, school flashers, emergency vehicle systems, and lighting controllers.
  • Installation & Fabrication: Fabricate and install vehicle detection systems for signalized intersections as needed.
  • Equipment Testing: Receive and test new traffic signal controller cabinets for functionality.
  • Airport Lighting: Maintain runway lighting and Non-Directional Beacon systems at local airports.
  • Display Maintenance: Troubleshoot and repair variable LED message board display signs.
  • Documentation & Parts Management: Interpret schematics, manage parts catalogs, and order electronic/electrical components.
  • Collaboration: Assist State agencies with maintenance and offer technical support to the City of Fairbanks signal maintenance personnel.

The working environment you can expect:

This position is based in Fairbanks, Alaska, within the Fairbanks District. In this position, you can expect a multifaceted working environment characterized by both collaboration and hands-on technical challenges. You will work closely with fellow technicians daily, fostering a team-oriented atmosphere that emphasizes support and knowledge sharing. Regular interactions with management, including the Traffic and Safety Chief Engineer monthly and the M&O Superintendent and Station Foreman on a weekly basis, will provide opportunities for professional development and feedback. The role requires a foundation in skills such as first aid, record keeping, computer programming, soldering techniques, and knowledge of electronic circuit board repair. You will engage in regular input into the Maintenance Management System (MMS) and utilize computer skills for timesheet management. Additionally, while public contact may occur occasionally, your primary focus will be on ensuring the effective maintenance and repair of electronic traffic control systems, all within a structured yet dynamic working framework.

COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIRED 
This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383), to register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety-sensitive duties, and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.

Maintenance Specialist, Traffic Cntrl & Elec. Sys, Journey 2 Lead A Class B Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement, is required at time of hire.


DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION & PUBLIC FACILITIES DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY

Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test. According to federal regulations, all violations and refusals will be maintained with the Federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse database.


ELECTRICIANs LICENSE REQUIRED

All applicants are required to have an Electricians license with the State of Alaska in order to be hired into the above position. A conditional hire approval can be given for those applicants who are licensed in a state who has entered into a reciprocal agreement with the State of Alaska. 

An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon successfully obtaining an Electricians license with the State of Alaska within 90 days and may begin work only AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the license.
