New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

Description of Job

About the Position
This position assists the Transportation Maintenance Worker II and III with journeyperson level work in operating and maintaining equipment, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, framing drywall and painting along with masonry and related trades. This position with assist with planning projects, developing cost estimates, setting priorities, and evaluating completeness and accuracy of assigned work orders and projects. Also, the position will provide general grounds security, and maintenance of major and minor structures, concrete work, framing, welding, and cutting. This position must maintain operational readiness for snow events and other emergencies and may be placed on call.

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Facility Maintenance and Construction

  • Work with local patrols on building and bridge renovations including, demolition and removal of scrape and debris from construction site for proper disposal, installation of drywall partitions, suspended ceilings, doors, windows, trim and window coverings. Concrete work, framing, finishing, tying rebar, repairing guard rail, patching of bridge decks, jackhammering, and using sand blasters for preventive maintenance. Build modular office space from custom designed plans and specifications. Workspace assemble includes partitions and furnishings. Make adjustments on site to accommodate changes to plans or unexpected problems. Modify existing modular offices.
  • Perform physical labor such as bending, reaching, carrying, climbing, digging, pounding, lifting, pulling, shoveling, raking, throwing, twisting, walking, stretching to achieve maintenance objectives.
  • Obtain, maintain, and use flagger certification during traffic control.
Building and Bridge Maintenance Repair
  • Repairing guard rial, patching bridge decks, make repairs to plumbing fixtures
  • Perform maintenance repairs to HVAC systems, garage doors, plumbing, office furniture, etc. as needed.
  • Perform routine bridge structure maintenance activities such as: cleaning drains and weep holes, cleaning bridge joints, bearings, abutments, pier caps and make sure that all water ways are clear of debris.
Painting
  • Prepare new and existing walls and surfaces for paint by taping spackling, sanding and priming, apply paint and operate equipment for striping the parking lot.
  • Painting graffiti on walls for pleasing aesthetic appearance and painting bridge structures to prolong the life of certain bridge components for preventative of structures.
Grounds Keeping
  • Assist groundskeeper by operating large and small lawn equipment: mowers, edger’s, weed eaters and blowers. Install and repair underground lawn sprinklers systems, prune trees and fertilize. Operate large and small snow blowers, snow blades and shovels to remove snow and ice from sidewalks, drive paths and parking areas. Apply ice melt chemicals.
  • Ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Complete pre- and post-trip inspections, via paper and electronically.
  • Perform and assist in equipment maintenance and repair.
Other Duties Assigned
  • Assist with stocking and materials within the storeroom when needed. Help with loading and unloading of supplies and materials with vendors and CDOT personnel.
  • Maintain a state of operational readiness, by utilizing technology to monitor weather conditions to be able to report to work in a timely manner and in emergency situations.
  • Assess emergency situations to determine appropriate action to take, ensure supervisor is notified.
  • Assist lead worker in monitoring work for quality control and efficiency.
  • Use computer software and CDOT programs to enter data and information to complete email, paperwork, reports, work orders, time sheets, fuel logs, supply orders, meter readings, weekly updates, and accident reports.
  • Accurately report work activities, time spent, location, equipment, materials, personnel involved on work orders.
  • Understand CDOT and state policies and procedures in order to implement the information in the documents that guide the daily work activities.
  • Attend and actively participate in team, project, and other meetings.
  • Learn and abide by relevant purchasing processes and procedures.
Work Environment:
  • 08:00am – 16:30pm, Monday – Friday (October through April) and 06:30am – 17:00pm Monday – Thursday (May through September). Snow shift and emergency call ins required to report.
  • Exposure to loud noise
  • Exposure to fumes, odors, gasses, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin
  • Required to use appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Required to work with chemicals and cleaning products
  • Some equipment requires the use of respirators
  • Work in close proximity to heavy traffic
  • Use of ladders and scissor lifts for heights of approximately 10 – 20’
  • Required to use various hand tools and to operate heavy equipment, such as backhoe, tractor, bucket truck, forklift, skid steer, loader, aerial devices and other equipment
  • Required to drive CDOT vehicles
  • Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600 V) and electrical shock
  • Frequently respond to emergencies outside of regular work hours and may work overtime including weekends and holidays
  • Must be willing and be physically able to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold), variable weather conditions, and at varying elevations up to 12,000 feet for long periods of time
  • Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties
  • The average work week is 40 hours a week, with periodic overtime due to emergencies or inclement weather
  • Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Out of town travel may be required at times for meetings and projects.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience Only

  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the structural trades (carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, painting or masonry).
AND
  • Regular Colorado Driver's License
OR
Education and Experience
  • A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and / or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to four (4) years. Documentation of this must be submitted with your application.
AND
  • Regular Colorado Driver's License

Conditions of Employment: The following conditions must be met and maintained in order to be employed and to continue employment at CDOT in this position, unless exempted by the Maintenance Superintendent or Traffic Program Engineer.

  • May be required to work overtime including weekends and holidays.
  • Essential Services Designation – Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services outside regular work hours to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
  • May be required to live within thirty (30) minutes' driving time in normal weather conditions to be able to respond in a timely manner after notified to report to work. Knowledge of an emergency or hazardous condition may be considered to be notification to report to work station.
  • Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where you can be reached for the purposes of responding to an emergency.
  • Required to attend training one week out of each year online or in Aurora.

  • Demonstrated experience in scheduling and planning daily work activities for subordinates;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Emergency Response Guidelines, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and supplement to set traffic control for road projects through different terrain, Colorado’s Chain Law, Federal Motor Carriers Safety Regulation, Colorado Commercial Driver’s License Manual, MLOS standards, M & S Standards, and CDOT Policies and Procedures;
  • Extensive experience safely and effectively operating and training others on several types of heavy equipment, such as front end loaders, tandem trucks, backhoes;
  • Extensive experience effectively using several types of hand tools;
  • Extensive experience performing physically demanding work assignments;
  • Strong positive and can-do attitude;

The Hiring Process:
