Make your mark in public service. As an accredited public health department, we're seeking a highly qualified candidate for the position of Laboratory Associate Manager, Mycobacteriology to join the Division of Medical-Clinical Services, Public Health Laboratory located in Decatur, GA.

The Division of Microbiology at the Georgia Public Health Laboratory (GPHL) is responsible for detecting, identifying, and reporting communicable diseases within the State of Georgia. The Division is responsible for maintaining expertise and capability in a wide variety of public health microbiology specialties. These include Mycobacteriology Reference Bacteriology, Enteric Bacteriology, Environmental Microbiology, Mycology, Parasitology, Virology, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Antimicrobial Resistance surveillance, Advanced Molecular Detection (AMD) etc. GPHL is seeking an experienced laboratory professional to serve as Associate Manager for Mycobacteriology and Antimicrobial Resistance Laboratory Network (ARLN) testing.

This is a mid-level manager role that reports directly to the Senior Manager and assists in managing day-to-day operational activities for Mycobacteriology and ARLN testing. Mycobacteriology/TB laboratory is a reference laboratory providing smear examination, isolation and identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and primary drug susceptibility testing for the State of Georgia.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical skills and assures the activities are congruent with the goals of the Division of Clinical Microbiology and ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory standards such as the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), OSHA, other federal and state regulations.
  • Perform clinical testing for Mycobacterium tuberculosis and monitor personnel competency.
  • Conduct and evaluate carbapenamase resistance detection by both phenotypic and genotypic tests, antibiotic susceptibility tests supporting Multidrug resistance organism (MDRO) surveillance and acute and long term care facility outbreak investigations.
  • Ensure proficiency tests (PT) for both mycobacteriology and ARLN are conducted, reviewed and results are submitted timely to the appropriate PT provider.
  • Assisting Senior Manager with monthly QA reports, annual metrics and deliverables for Centers for Disease Control TB Co-operative Agreement and State TB program.
  • Collaborate and co-ordinate with District Health Departments, State TB epidemiologist, clinicians with TB testing and sending the specimens to CDC Division of Tuberculosis and Elimination Branch for molecular drug susceptibility testing.
  • Provide administrative and leadership role by directly managing bench level technologists approves scheduling and leave, and work assignments, decisions regarding hiring, promotions, disciplinary actions, and other administrative duties as assigned by your manager.
  • Provide workforce development activities include staff engagement, coaching and mentoring, staff recognition, cross training and provide professional developmental activities to sustain employee retention, integrates strategic thinking into decisions and long-term planning for TB laboratory operations.
  • Work closely with QA manager and oversees quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement of the Mycobacteriology and ARLN units including the assay development, review, conduct validations and verifications, assay implementation, documentation of non-conforming events and corrective actions and communication of all laboratory quality processes.
  • Work closely with Senior Manager in analyzing data, identifying trends, monitor prevention and correction of quality deviations, and develop reports for management utilizing technical knowledge and laboratory experience. Monitor critical indicators, customer satisfaction and performance metrics.
  • Work closely with GPHL Biosafety Officer and support exceptional efforts to maintain compliance with institutional biosafety and chemical safety policies including reviewing and approving risk assessments.

Must also possess the following:


  • Proficient written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to adhere to policies and principles governing professional and scientific ethics and rules of conduct, exemplifying integrity, and serving as a role model of ethical behavior.
  • Meets personnel requirements (42 CFR 493.1461) and responsibilities (for General Supervisor (42 CFR 493.1463) performing high complexity testing as defined by 42 CFR 493, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA).

Master's degree in a related science area from an accredited college or university AND Two years of experience in a clinical laboratory AND certification as a Medical Technologist, MT (ASCP), or equivalent OR Bachelor's degree in a related science area from an accredited college or university AND Four years of experience in a clinical laboratory AND certification as a Medical Technologist, MT (ASCP) or equivalent.

Salary : $62,000 - $70,500
