Job Summary
The Minnesota Board of Medical Practice (BMP) protects the public's health and safety by assuring that the people who practice medicine or as an allied health professional are competent, ethical practitioners with the necessary knowledge and skills appropriate to their title and role. The Board regulates over 40,000 health care providers, and annually issues over 3,500 new credentials and investigates over 1,100 complaints. The BMP enforces statutes and rules for the regulation of people who practice medicine or as an allied health professional including acupuncturists, athletic trainers, genetic counselors, naturopathic doctors, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, and traditional midwives.
The Deputy Director serves as the assistant executive officer for the BMP, providing executive level management of agency operations and carrying out the agency’s statutory mandate and mission. The incumbent provides executive management, leadership and direction to the operations of the agency. The Deputy Director develops policies, establishes priorities, participates in all operations of the agency, engages in the legislative process, establishes and maintains professional working relationships with numerous external partners, and assures efficient delivery of the agency’s services and communications. The person in this position assures that agency operations, public relations, and organizational strategies are implemented toward achievement of the agency’s mission, goals, and objectives within the framework of applicable state and federal laws and rules.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Four years of professional experience in public administration, organizational operations and management, occupational or health regulation, or other closely related organizational leadership experience. Bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, organizational leadership, communications or a related field may substitute for one year of experience.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively develop, coordinate, and convey information to internal and external partners with a broad range of interests, needs and abilities.
- Leadership skills to successfully manage and motivate staff, establish priorities, assign tasks, and give and receive feedback.
- Understanding of human relations, finance and budget practices sufficient to act in the capacity of the Executive Director in their absence.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the capacity to recognize and identify organizational and external policy issues and manage complex situations to comply with timelines and goals.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple and competing priorities within required timelines and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated digital literacy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in healthcare management, public policy and administration, organizational leadership, or a Juris Doctor.
- Understanding of the numerous governing statutes and rules that direct the work of the agency, including the practices acts of all professions regulated by the Board, as well as MN Statutes Chapter 214, the MN Government Data Practices Ace, the Administrative Procedures Act, the open meeting law, and other applicable state and federal statutes, laws, and rules.
- Knowledge and understanding of the statutory authority, organizational structure, functions and objectives of health professional licensing and regulation.
- Experience identifying and measuring outcomes, engaging in strategic planning and demonstrating cultural sensitivity and commitment to equity and inclusion.
