This position is in the Office of Injury and Violence Prevention (OIVP), which is housed in the Injury and Behavioral Epidemiology Bureau of the Center for Health Protection Services of the New Mexico Department of Health. This position will sit in the Injury Prevention Unit, which currently focuses on childhood injury prevention, adult falls prevention and a Childhood Fatality Review statewide surveillance system. OIVP also includes programs to prevent community violence, gun violence, sexual violence, and suicide. This office also manages New Mexico's National Violent Death Reporting surveillance system. The Office of Injury and Violence Prevention presently has over 20 positions, housed in three units: the epidemiology unit, the injury prevention unit, and the violence prevention unit.
Why does the job exist?
The successful candidate will serve in the classification of a prevention specialist in the role of Injury Prevention Specialist for the New Mexico Department of Health. He/She/They will be responsible for injury prevention education and program support. The candidate, in collaboration with injury prevention coordinators, epidemiologists, statewide stakeholders and partners will strengthen networks and develop resources for effective and long-term injury prevention programs in New Mexico. The work is done by using data to identify community and population needs and best practices for evidence-based prevention. The prevention specialist will assist in planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating injury related topics and programs designed to encourage healthy lifestyles, policies and environments which contribute to reduction in injuries in the state. They may be tasked with creating educational materials for healthcare professionals and community organizations that provide injury prevention and intervention services. They will assist in learning about adverse childhood experiences and other risk factors and protective factors related to injury prevention of the people of New Mexico.

Strengthening networks and developing resources for effective and long-term injury prevention programs in New Mexico;
Creating or identifying evidence based injury prevention content, disseminating educational materials to professionals and community organization that provide injury prevention and intervention services;
Using data to identify community needs to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate programs;
Organizing and facilitating routine and special meetings;
Assist in preparation of grant applications and reports; and
Adaptability to support the Injury Prevention Unit as needed.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Public Health or Education and two (2) years of experience in a health related field. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
The Injury Prevention Unit is an excellent team and we care deeply about the service and quality of our work. Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to computer / visual / video display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage. Work will be mostly self-directed and sometimes as part of a team. We are looking for someone who will join us in supporting the health of New Mexicans.
