The Safety Bureau ensures regulatory compliance pertaining to New Mexico's Annual Safety Inspection requirement, Risk Reduction Program (RRP), and provides safety assistance, guidance, and training to promote a safe working environment to reduce work related injuries and illnesses. The Workers' Compensation Administration assures the quick and efficient delivery of indemnity and medical benefits to injured workers at a reasonable cost to employers.
Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to assist New Mexico business communities with support of a safe working environment by maintaining Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) administrative processes, conducting basic OSH training, and effectively using a range of OSH tools and processes to comply with New Mexico Workers' Compensation Administration Laws and Regulations.
How does it get done?
The key responsibilities for this position is to conduct a safety analysis of business accidents and injuries; identify systemic patterns and trends that may contribute to safety hazards and / or work related injuries; determine if businesses are an ideal candidate for enrollment into the Risk Reduction Program; provide notification of required safety audits and inspections, research, track and record business information utilizing various safety data bases.
Perform safety inspections and audits for a variety of business industries to ensure compliance with the $15k Annual Safety Inspection Program; contact businesses that are non-compliant by phone or field visit; research, track, and enter detail business information into a safety database; prepare enforcement referral cases for businesses not compliant with safety statues; and attend enforcement hearings.
Participate in regional business outreach efforts; conduct safety training classes for businesses as necessary; perform ergonomic evaluations; complete audits in support of the Self-Insurance Program as assigned; attend conferences; and perform other duties related to the Worker's Compensation Administration safety program.

Provide necessary safety related services to New Mexico businesses.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate would have completed either an OSHA 51O or 511 courses; have an extensive safety background in general and construction industries; familiar performing facility inspections and safety audits; and able to recognize safety hazards in the workplace. Background in public speaking and experience presenting safety training; able to perform ergonomic evaluations; familiar with workers compensation and exhibit a passion for safety with integrity and responsibility.
Minimum Qualification
Associate's degree in Occupational Health, Safety, or a related field such as Industrial Safety, Engineering, Biology, or Chemistry and two (2) years of experience in a risk management or a safety related field (e.g. loss control, safety, and Worker's Compensation case management activities and / or workplace inspections). Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and / or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Drivers License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a field and office setting. Exposure to Visual / Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, lifting and reaching may be required. Ability to complete assignments with a high level of accuracy within strict time constraints, must be able to lift 25-30 lbs. Extensive driving, including overnight travel is required of this position. Interacting with the general public and making recommendations on safety related issues to businesses in the region. Ability to read, write and speak in Spanish is preferred. Required to drive a State Vehicle in course of job duties. Successful completion of the OSHA 510 or OSHA 511 course is required.
