Why does the job exist?
The position exists to provide paralegal and legal assistant support to the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) Office of General Counsel (OGC) by having the knowledge to perform all the necessary tasks, coordinating legal support activities, and dealing with the public, businesses, and other organizations.
How does it get done?
Associate degree in Paralegal Studies and two (2) years of work experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting legal research, and maintaining a case management/tracking system. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Also required to travel to hearings and meetings.

- Work under the guidance and direction of an attorney
- Develop reporting procedures
- Identify and describe legal problem areas
- Maintain accurate case files, correspondence, and materials relating to cases
- Notarize documents and files in court records
- Search records
- Draft and review legal documents and file them with the NMED hearing office or state courts
- New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment
- Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations
