Position: Rail Unit Intern
Position Overview:
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Rail Programs Unit is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented intern to support strategic planning activities and contribute to critical rail and intermodal transportation initiatives. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in transportation planning, intercity passenger rail development, and intermodal transportation connections.
Responsibilities:
- Collect information and review/edit planning documents related to strategic rail programs, including the Corridor ID program to expand intercity passenger rail.
- Support the Rail Services Team by gathering information and strategizing on connections between NC By Train services and local transit/intercity bus programs.
- Participate in project meetings and assist in the preparation of materials for outreach events.
- Utilize GIS tools and spreadsheets for data analysis and project support, if applicable to your skills and experience.
- Contribute to team-wide efforts, including occasional in-person outreach or event assistance.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Required: Strong word processing and spreadsheet skills.
- Preferred: Experience with GIS and database management.
- Ideal academic backgrounds include transportation planning, engineering, public policy, or related fields.
- Strong written and interpersonal communication skills, as well as attention to detail.

- Must be a currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors, masters, or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) within the past three years.
- 24 credit hours completed.
- Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)
- Has legal right to work in the U.S. and do not need sponsorship
