This position is located in the Wilkes County Roadside Environmental Unit in Division 11 as a Transportation Worker II. Â Â This is an intermediate level position that consists of erosion control and vegetation management. Â Work involves seeding and mulching, plant bed maintenance and herbicide applications. Â This Unit is responsible for ensuring all work adheres to the 1973 Sedimentation Pollution Control Act, the NC Department of Agriculture Pesticide Division's regulations, OSHA and all other Federal, State or Local laws and ordinances governing the work involved, installation and maintenance of Storm water BMP's. Â This position will serve as a lead worker, assisting with on-the-job training, record-keeping, traffic control setups, and various other tasks. Â Work also includes operation, inspection, and maintenance of equipment including trucks, tractors, tractor attachments, mulch blower and similar equipment, as well as hand and power tools. Â This position will also have responsibilities during snow and ice operations. Â Employee will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. Â Employee will work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment, with hand and power tools and various other pieces of equipment. Â Employee must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed. Â Employee must be able to train lower-level workers. Â Work involves walking and standing for long periods of time in and around steep and uneven terrain.

Employee in this position will be expected to have working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Â Â The selected applicant will be expected to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Â The selected applicant will be required to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, while working in extreme weather conditions and temperatures. Applicant will be required to operate a state vehicle. May require working during non-traditional hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and times of emergency. Snow and ice operations may be required. Safety toe footwear is required. Â The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Â Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of the on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Â Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. Â Â As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed following the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety Toe shoes are required. Â Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employee evaluation.

- Knowledge of vegetation management including but not limited to shrubs, trees, fertilizer, etc., using sound horticultural practices.
- Experience in applying herbicides to control weeds and brush
- Must be able to obtain an NC Pesticide Operators License with an endorsement in Ornamentals & Turf and right of way within 60 days.
- Experience in operation of pesticide applicator, truck, tractors, and utility vehicles
- Experience in at least one piece of Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, front end loader, dump truck, tractor "A" boom mower, mulch blower, sod seeder, tractor with sprayer attachments, brush chipper, conventional pesticide applicator, hydro seeder, skid steer.
