Salary Grade: NC08 / Salary Range: $36,682 - $64,194Â

This posting is for a Transportation Worker IV position for the Stanly County Maintenance Unit. This position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, lee boy asphalt maintainer, motor grader, rollers, and other pieces as needed on the various crews. Â This position will also serve as a lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Â Must carry out complete oral and written instructions. Responsibilities include installing traffic control and erosion control devices, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation, manual tree and brush removal, debris and litter removal, snow plowing, spreading salt, and salt brine application. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Â Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances.

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following

  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
  • Experience in one of the following: Â shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations; as well as, directing the daily activities of a work crew
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeperÂ

Additional Expectations

Employees must be able to lift up to 80 pounds, shoulder high. Must be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 60 feet in height without accommodations. Perform assigned tasks and understand and follow both oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. The employees shall have the ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signals and other traffic control devices. Employees will be expected to work in environmental conditions which include extreme cold and excessive heat conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy construction. Safety toe shoes will be needed. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. Â As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A CDL with no endorsement. Â Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.Â

High school or General Education Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the are of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Â

Necessary Special Requirements: Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.Â
