In conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance activities, performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions. Operates and supervises the operation of heavy equipment such as, but not limited to, motor graders, backhoes, and front-end loader. Performs a variety of tasks for the Patching Crew related to maintenance operations, including patching roadway surfaces, installing and paving driveways, installing pipe, resurfacing projects with hot plant mix, cold plant mix, and bituminous asphalt surfacing, correcting low shoulder conditions, installing and maintaining traffic controls and flagging to direct traffic safely through work zones, and performing manual skilled labor, etc. Assists other maintenance crews, as needed, with other maintenance operations to complete routine maintenance work and maintenance plans. Operates AMZ machine. Assists in the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Assists in flagging traffic in work zones during roadway repair and patching operations to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public, and equipment. Flags traffic using sign board and/or handheld flags. Operates small engine equipment such as chain saws, weed eaters, tamping machines, and pavement breakers as needed. Performs duties using manual labor in maintenance operations as needed. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned equipment and vehicles to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present to get maximum utilization of equipment. Conducts safety inspections on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Reports daily work performed, including specific accomplishments, work locations, equipment utilization, and quantity of materials used to Foreman. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended 12-hour shifts. Operates both anti-icing and removal equipment (snowplows and sand and salt spreaders) during snow and ice response on highways and bridges. Performs other related job duties as requested or assigned by supervisor.One (1) year of related work experience; or relevant education may substitute for the experience requirement. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position.
