This position may be eligible for telework.   The default assigned work location for this position is in Olympia, Washington.  Frequency of onsite work will vary based on business and operational needs.

The Capital and Asset Management Program (CAMP) mission is to serve the Department by delivering technical and professional engineering, construction, and maintenance to sustain facilities, infrastructure, and ecosystems under the Department’s care.

 

In this role, you will interpret and follow detailed survey project instructions issued by the Department Chief Surveyor.

 

You will provide professional level analysis of land corner and property boundary evidence, preparing maps and accurate records.

In this dynamic role, you will provide agency support in boundary issues and public access to survey information and, when directed, act as liaison for the Chief Surveyor.

 

With your experience, you will ensure compliance with the minimum standards of measurement accuracy as prescribes in Washington Administrative Code, Chapter 332-130.


We are seeking a candidate to be our survey staff specialist and have on-site supervision of survey project field activities.

Here are some things you will do in this role:

 On-site supervision of survey project field activities: 
  • Establish survey control networks utilizing both conventional and Global Positioning System equipment.
  • Locate all necessary survey monuments and/or topographic features related to specific project.
  • Perform professional level analysis of land corner and property boundary evidence.
  • Ensure field survey measurements meet or exceed the minimum standards for measurement accuracy.
Prepare survey maps: 
  • Process and analyze field survey data.
  • Prepare official record of survey maps.
  • Prepare topographic maps.
  • Maintaining and organizing the Department’s survey records.
Leading and mentoring: 
  • Leads and mentors technical and professional level staff in order to support an effective, motivated team.
  • Sets goals and objectives, develops strategies to implement, and develops performance measurements and standards for the purpose of ensuring individual and program performance objectives are met.
  • Monitors and inspects work in progress to ensure continuity and timely completion of work.
  • Develops and implements staff training and development plans to provide cross training of employees, specific job-related training and other approaches to provide opportunities for staff flexibility and development.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Duties are typically performed in the field.  Field work requires working in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or snow. Work happens in rough terrain, along riverbanks, and on slippery slopes. While trekking up and down steep terrain, you will need to carry up to 80 pounds (backpacks, tripods, and hand tools). There is a potential to encounter stinging plants, wildlife, and insects.
    • While working in the office setting, may experience long periods of sitting or standing looking into a computer monitor. Exposure to hazards is limited to those commonly found in government office environments.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • 10 hours per day, Monday - Thursday.
    • Some work weeks could consist of up to 4 consecutive nights out of town.
    • More working hours are anticipated during construction season May-August.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Up to 80% Travel/Field.
    • Frequent travel to work sites requiring consecutive overnight stays.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Computer hardware and software; cell phone; laptop computer; conventional and GPS survey equipment, inflatable boat, depth sounder, and motor vehicles.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Project Coordinators, Engineering and the General public.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Valid Professional Land Surveyor license in the state of Washington.
Proficient in survey-related equipment including but not limited to:
  • Total Station.
  • RTK GPS.
  • Robotic instrument.
  • Associated related data collectors.
License:
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite Products, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Trimble GPS Business Center.
