This position offers the opportunity to design, deploy, and maintain IT data infrastructure, enhancing the agency's scientific capabilities through efficient and effective data solutions.
Key responsibilities include designing and supporting cloud-based data management systems, configuring and maintaining cloud storage and reporting functions, and providing ongoing support for data management activities.
What to Expect-
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Scientific Data Program Engineer will,
Scientific Data Management Architecture and Design:
- Coordinate with multiple internal and external stakeholders and user groups to define data requirements, design, normalize, and implement data storage, transformation, analysis, and reporting solutions.
- Design and implement automated data pipelines through scripting, replication, or other means and spanning a variety of environments.
- Design data pipelines for data to move between environments - some environments are within the agency (State Data Center and Cloud Service Provider environments such as AWS and MS Azure), while others are managed by third parties (SaaS/PaaS).
- Design and implement Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) patterns and scripts to migrate data across systems.
- Develop and maintain appropriate database entity relationship (ER) diagrams and metadata. Write documentation to communicate capabilities to less technical user groups.
- Write and maintain documentation related to cloud storage, compute, and CSP services to ensure continuity of operations.
Cloud Storage Administration:
- Design and implement Cloud storage solutions to support Scientific Data Management.
- Deploy and maintain Cloud Storage Infrastructure across multiple Cloud Service Provider (CSP) storage environments (AWS S3 and Azure blob).
- Deploy and manage data cataloging solutions to identify and manage different data sets across CSP environments.
- Collaborate with other IT teams to plan and execute solution deployments and upgrades in the cloud.
- Manage Role Based Access Control (RBAC) provisioning across storage areas.
- Implement and enforce cloud policies and procedures to ensure compliance with industry regulations and company standards (WA State policy, CJIS, PII).
Manage Cloud Services for Data Management:
- Design and implement CSP data service solutions to support Scientific Data Management (AWS Athena, Redshift, Sagemaker, Glue).
- Create and maintain scripts for the automation and management of service integration across data pipelines.
- Design, write, and document extract, transform, and load (ETL) programs and procedures.
- Design, deploy, and manage a data management cataloguing solution.
- Ensure data validation procedures are complete when data is imported or exported.
- Support virtual infrastructure both on prem (State Data Center) as well as CSP provided virtual infrastructure as related to data management pipelines (PostgreSQL and SQL service)
- Coordinate with other WDFW IT teams such as Biological Data Services and GIS service teams to ensure streamlined and integrated cloud service management.
Working Conditions:
Work Setting, including hazards: General office environment with a cubical workstation. Occasional work in the datacenter.
Schedule: Typically, Monday – Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. Must be available to respond in an emergency
Travel Requirements: Some travel may be required to regional and other remote offices.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology or other related field.
AND
Five (5) years of experience managing, configuring and administering cloud environments.
- Including experience with:
- Working with virtual servers and virtual hypervisors, such as Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware
- Cloud-based hypervisors in AWS and Azure
- Managing data sets, data pipelines, and/or data analytics solutions or infrastructure.
Please Note: Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
Must pass fingerprint and background check due to exposure to law enforcement and sensitive data.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:
- AWS Solutions Architect
- Security or Network Certification
Knowledge of:
- Cloud platforms, concepts, and resources (e.g. AWS/Azure)
- Data management concepts, solutions
- Microsoft operating system installation and configuration
- Enterprise Information Technology systems and structures
- Network Protocols, IPv4, DNS, and DHCP.
