In partnership with individuals and organizations, DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor opportunities.

The Wisconsin DNR is hiring an LTE (Limited Term Employee) – Wildlife Technician located at our La Crosse Service Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Position Summary


The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is seeking two Wildlife Technicians to assist with wildlife management efforts in the Black River Falls work unit. These positions will be based out of the La Crosse DNR Service Center and will be responsible for implementing habitat management efforts, conducting wildlife and habitat surveys, assisting with chronic wasting disease sampling, waterfowl banding, elk monitoring and research, as well as property and equipment maintenance.

30% - Perform grassland, wetland and forest habitat management work including shrub and grassland mowing, tree and invasive species removal, forest opening maintenance, firebreak installation, invasive species control, flowage maintenance/monitoring and forest habitat improvement using equipment such as ATV's, chainsaws, brushsaws, backpack sprayers and other equipment.

25% - Assist with wildlife and habitat management efforts along the Mississippi River including amphibian and vegetation surveys/monitoring, waterfowl banding, and equipment maintenance.

15% - Assist with chronic wasting disease surveillance efforts in the Black River Falls work unit by working with cooperative stations and self-service kiosks to collect CWD samples, providing supplies, ensuring quality control, and performing tissue extraction following all lab and safety protocols.

10% - Assist in conducting elk monitoring and research in the central elk range including elk telemetry checks, radio-collaring of calves, mortality investigations and addressing conflict situations.

10% - Perform general maintenance for public use facilities on state-owned lands by conducting property inspections, installing or maintaining property signs and gates, and ensuring safe and accessible public use areas.

10% - Conduct seasonal wildlife surveys, respond to nuisance/injured wildlife reports, assist with outreach and education efforts, collect wildlife diseases samples and provide wildlife management related customer service as needed.

Salary Information


This position pays between $15 to $16.50 per hour and is in pay schedule and range 06-12. For current and eligible former State employees, compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

Job Details


This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin.

LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours per position within a twelve-month period.

Qualifications


Required:
  • The selected candidate must be able to drive a state vehicle. Candidates with three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years, or who have an OWI/DUI violation within the past year are barred from driving state vehicles.
  • Knowledge and experience related to wildlife ecology and habitat management experiences
  • Possess good organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and the public
Preferred:
  • Experience with motorboat operation and certified in WI Boater Safety
  • Experience with GIS and GPS
  • Proficient in Microsoft programs
