What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Technician position at Stephen F. Austin University?
This is a technical position responsible for assisting the executive director and departmental staff with creating a safe and healthy environment for students, employees, and visitors to work and learn. Specifically assists with the inspection of all university buildings on and off campus, including but not limited to stairwells, mechanical rooms, offices, classrooms, laboratories, and the surrounding grounds. Focuses on fire and life safety by following the National Fire Protection Association’s Life Safety Code. Reports to the Executive Director of Environmental Health, Safety, and Risk Management.
Essential Job Functions
1. Inspects all university buildings on and off campus, including but not limited to stairwells, mechanical rooms, offices, classrooms, laboratories, and the surrounding grounds.
2. Provides technical expertise, makes recommendations, and follows up on inspection recommendations.
3. Creates database, spreadsheets, reports, and work orders so fire and life safety violations can be tracked and repaired.
4. Interprets a variety of instruction furnished in written and oral forms, specifically the NFPA Life Safety Code 101.
5. Serves as a liaison of the university to federal, state, and local authorities.
6. Conducts fire safety training for SFA students and employees, specifically fire drills.
7. Assists with emergency procedures.
8. Monitors special events to ensure compliance with fire and life safety.

High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Required Experience and Training
One year of related experience is required. Experience in fire and life safety code interpretation and building inspections is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Texas Commission on Fire Protection Certification as a Structural Firefighter or Fire Inspector is preferred.
