Job Description:
Performs duties to operate the excavator/trackhoe in safe and efficient manner to perform asphalt plant aggregate and milling work.
Job Duties:
- Check all fluid levels at the beginning of engine startup for the day; monitor gauges and fluid levels throughout the day during operation.
- Monitor the operation of the excavator/trackhoe throughout the workday; maintain an awareness of unusual noises or operations and bring any exception of the attention of the supervisor.
- Perform light mechanical adjustments and/ or assist mechanic in performing repairs on assigned equipment; assist with the lubrication and fueling of the hoe.
- The ability to perform a variety of tasks which may include loading crusher, shaping subgrades, shaping base materials stockpiles, and hoisting materials.
- The ability to make cuts in the area of known utilities without causing damage to the underground utility, work boom and bucket around overhead lines without causing damage.
- The ability to operate the excavator/trackhoe in a manner to assure the safety of personnel around the equipment.
- The ability to operate the excavator/trackhoe in a manner to prevent damage to the equipment or injury to the operator.
- The ability to operate the excavator/trackhoe around structures, tools and equipment so not to damage the structures, tools, or equipment; closely monitor the position of the boom and bucket so as to not damage surrounding structures.
- Keep excavator/trackhoe clean and in orderly condition; keep tracks on trackhoe clean and free of debris.
- Follow all safety rules and company policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience & Knowledge:
- Use of reading and writing, adding, and subtracting of whole numbers; following of instructions; use of fixed gauges. Reading instruments and similar devices where interpretation is required.
- Over 1 year and up to 3 years to become familiar with the operation of the excavator/trackhoe to obtain desired results.
Initiative and Ingenuity:
Exercise judgment to comply with instructions or prescribed routines, methods or practices involved in the making of minor decisions with the limitation of standard methods and procedures.
Physical Activity/Demand:
- Position requires the ability to climb into, on to, or under machine; the ability to grasp control levers, to push and pull levers and to have sensitivity in touch to feel amount of pressure exerted on levers, such physical activity to operate control levers is repetitive in motion of the wrist, hands and or fingers, position requires ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and the ability to perceive sounds and receive detailed information through oral communications, and to make fine discrimination in equipment noises which may indicate mechanical problems.
- Light physical effort required to operate the levers pedals and controls on the hoe, occasional lifting or moving of lightweight materials under 25 pounds and occassionally over 50 pounds.
Mental & Visual Demand:
Continuous mental and visual attention; usually repetitive or diversified operations requiring constant alertness or activity position requires visuals acuity including depth perception and field of vision.
Responsibility for Equipment:
Responsible for preventing damage to equipment due to mistakes, carelessness, incorrect process or procedures, such mishaps could be costly in terms of repair/ replacement of equipment as well as production time.
Responsibility for Material:
Responsible for preventing damage to material worked or handled.
Responsibility for Safety of Others:
Constant care necessary to prevent injury to others, due to inherent hazards; should an accident should it occur, possible result in injuries of a partially incapacitating nature such as a loss of an arm, leg or eye or severe health hazard.
Responsibility for Work of Others:
Responsible for own work.
Working Conditions:
Somewhat disagreeable working conditions with continuous exposure to dust, dirt seasonal temperature variances and machine noise, with several elements continuously present to the extent of being objectionable.
Hazards:
Hazard, should they occur, could result in partial incapacitation due to fractures, cuts or others similar type injuries.
