POSTED ON 4/14/2025 CLOSED ON 4/17/2025

What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Counselor position at Tabor Academy?

Position Start Date: July 1, 2025

Position Summary:

Tabor Academy seeks a compassionate and dedicated School Counselor to support the emotional wellbeing of our students—both individually and as a community—within our dynamic residential setting. The School Counselor works with the Counseling Office, Health Center staff, Academic Office, and the Deans’ Office to coordinate efforts that meet the needs of individual students, as well as cultivate a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate wellness program. The School Counselor must hold an advanced degree in counseling, social work, or a related field and have a minimum of five years of experience in individual counseling or acute crisis services. Candidates must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Massachusetts. Experience with a strong understanding of adolescents and the boarding school environment is strongly preferred. This is a full-time, exempt, salaried staff position that follows the academic year schedule, with vacation time typically scheduled during the summer recess and school breaks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • see students on an appointment and “drop in” basis; make any necessary referrals
  • conduct and coordinate mental health assessments of students
  • maintain appropriate communication and follow up with other members of the Counseling office, the Deans’ office, Academic office, Health Center staff, and the Head of School’s office
  • serve as a resource for faculty and staff in an effort to support their students as advisors, dorm parents, teachers and coaches
  • oversee Peer Listening program
  • serve on the Health Committee
  • help to coordinate student leaves
  • help develop a Health and Wellness education program at Tabor in partnership with the Director of Student Wellbeing and the Director of Counseling
  • be a presence in the life of the school
  • attend and/or present at regional and national conferences

On-Call Requirements: This position includes on-call responsibilities approximately two weekdays per week and every other weekend. On-call duties involve being available for urgent student support needs outside of regular business hours.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • possess excellent interpersonal, communication (writing, presenting, listening), and organizational skills
  • possess a high degree of cultural competency and demonstrated experience working with diverse populations
  • be an energetic and initiative-driven participant in an administration focused on advancing Tabor’s mission
  • understand the current research and policy surrounding adolescent growth and behavior
  • convey patience, empathy, and enthusiasm in their work with adolescents
  • enjoy collaborating with colleagues within and across all areas and aspects of school life
  • invest in the community by appropriately participating in the life of the School, gaining a cultural proficiency that helps to provide better care for our students
  • be self-reflective and versatile, able to work independently, and committed to professional growth

Licensure Requirement:
Candidates must be license-eligible in the state of Massachusetts at the time of hire. While we welcome applicants who are currently licensed in another state (e.g., Rhode Island), they must either hold or obtain independent clinical licensure in Massachusetts (e.g., LICSW, LMHC, or equivalent) by April 2026 to remain in the role beyond the current academic year.

School counselor certification is not required, as this position adheres to clinical licensure standards rather than school-based certification.

Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in counseling or social work
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in outpatient counseling or crisis intervention experience
  • Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in:
  • School administration or related management
  • Secondary school environments
  • Residential communities or boarding schools
