JOB TITLE: PRINCIPAL - MIDDLE SCHOOL
JOB DESCRIPTION NARRATIVE:
Serves as the instructional leader for the Junior High School. Is responsible for the general welfare of the staff and students. Carries out the educational programs adopted by the District in accordance with State and Federal laws and regulations and the policies and regulations of the local Board of Education.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge:
Elementary or Secondary Administrative Certification
Skills:
A minimum of three years of teaching experience is required. Administrative experience is preferred.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Primary:
General
- Is responsible for the administration and supervision of the assigned school. All administrative functions shall be carried out in accordance with the policies and procedures adopted by the Board of Education or specified by the Superintendent. Participates in District planning and decision making in such a way that the best interests of the school's programs and District education in general are represented.
Staff
- Assists in recruiting, screening, interviewing and recommending qualified candidates for positions on the school staff and in the orientation of new personnel.
- Is responsible for the supervision of instruction in the assigned school. Visits teachers, assuring that they have prepared lesson plans and well-developed objectives, are following District curriculum, are using effective teaching methods and are well-prepared when substitute teachers are necessary. Uses available resources and techniques to assist and stimulate teachers to improve instruction and develop professionally. Provides for continuous staff development.
- Assures that each staff member is made aware of and has access to the Policies and Procedures of the Board of Education. Notifies them of all rules, orders and resolutions that may be adopted by the Board or issued by the Superintendent.
- Communicates regularly with assigned staff through scheduled meetings, memos and individual contacts.
- Visits classrooms on a regular basis, other than for evaluations. Plans to spend at least 30% of the time out of the office.
- Assigns to teachers and other school employees within their jurisdiction such duties as are necessary to maintain proper discipline and supervision in the buildings and on the grounds, making efforts to equalize the work load in making such assignments.
- Assures that teachers and other staff make accurate and timely reports.
- Evaluates teachers and other staff members following adopted procedures and specified dates.
- Makes appropriate recommendations for the dismissal of staff, following accepted procedures and guidelines.
- Arranges for substitute teachers and helps them to function effectively.
- Advises and assists teachers in working with difficult cases of discipline.
Students
- Develops school rules and regulations using input from staff, students and parents which are in accordance with District policy and philosophy. These will be reviewed annually.
- Organizes and supervises pupil enrollment and scheduling according to adopted procedures.
- Maintains student records which are accurate and complete.
- Maintains students conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, affording due process to students when appropriate.
- Arranges for and/or facilitates special learning experiences for students such as field trips, lectures, performances, extra-curricular activities, etc.
- Provides supervision at school activities on a regular basis. Arrangements should be made for others to supervise when the principal cannot be in attendance.
- Coordinates the activities of clubs and organizations with the school.
Parents/Community
- Is responsible for public relations for the assigned building. Produces or arranges for the production of newsletters, bulletins, etc., to keep the public informed about activities within the school. Acts as communications leader, serving as liaison between the school and the community, interpreting activities and policies of the school and encouraging community participation in school life.
- Notifies and holds conferences with parents whenever possible in discipline cases where pupils are repeat offenders or when corporal punishment may be deemed necessary.
Programs
- Works cooperatively with auxiliary services such as Special Education, Food Service, Transportation and Maintenance. Provides supervision and support where appropriate.
- Assists in the selection of and/or supervises the administration of any testing programs in the assigned building.
- Assumes responsibility for the safety, administration and maintenance of the school plant and equipment. Supervises the assigned custodial staff to optimize the use of school facilities.
- Assumes the responsibility to allocate classroom space.
Finance/Reports
- Provides accurate, timely reports as may be required.
- Prepares and submits the school's budgetary requests for purchases and repairs, and monitors expenditures of funds.
- Makes appropriate written reports to the Superintendent regarding monies collected and expended.
Other
- Allows no advertisements or circulars, other than instructional circulars or bulletins, to be distributed among pupils or teachers on any school premises. Does not permit agents to canvas in their respective buildings. Permits only such lectures, concerts, exhibits or other forms of entertainment to be given in the schools as may be approved by the Superintendent.
- Conducts at least two fire drills during the school year. The hours and dates on which fire drills are given, together with the time necessary to empty the building, shall be recorded by the principal. Appropriate tornado drills shall be conducted and the staff and pupils shall be instructed on appropriate procedures.
- Provides leadership in developing District and building curriculum.
- Attends scheduled Central Office meetings and other meetings which are appropriate and/or requested.
- Attends conventions and conferences and reads professional materials as are necessary to keep informed on current educational trends and developments.
- Attends Board meetings when requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
