What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nurse Extern- Summer Cohort position at Tanner Health?
The goal of the Nurse Extern Program is to support, grow, and develop nursing students during their study at an accredited school of nursing. Rotations on various acute care units provide valuable clinical experience while working flexible hours. The program promotes development of teamwork, critical thinking, and problem resolution skills that are foundational to a long, successful nursing career. In addition to an hourly rate, externs receive a monthly stipend of $500.
The nurse extern is required to work a minimum of 36 hours per 6-week schedule. In exchange for the monthly stipend, there is an expectation to continue working for Tanner after graduation and licensure. The contractual agreement is fulfilled by working for Tanner in a full-time nursing position for an equal number of months that the stipend was received.

Qualifications
- RN nursing student
- Completion of a clinical rotation in a nursing program
- NOTE: BLS within 30 days
- COMMUNICATION TEAM WORK CONDUCT: Demonstrates the ability to communicate and work effectively with others to promote safe, efficient care. Exhibits the Tanner Standards of Behavior. Communicates with patients, visitors and families in a manner which promotes patient satisfaction.
- DOCUMENTATION AND MANAGMENT OF THE MEDICAL RECORD: Documents patient care in compliance with policy and standards.
- LEARNING ENVIRONMENT: As a Nurse Extern, observes and participates in unit activities as permitted by scope of job. Actively seeks to gain knowledge which promotes greater understanding of role of Registered Nurse in hospital setting.
- PROVISION OF CARE: Provides age appropriate basic nursing care for population served as directed by the RN or LPN.
- STANDARDS POLICY & PROCEDURE: Understands organizational policies & procedures & standards related to the provision of safe patient care: including TJC, Georgia Board of Nursing, Infection Prevention, and other regulatory agencies.
Compliance Statement
Employee performs within the prescribed limits of Tanner Health System's Ethics and Compliance program. Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, the Compliance Officer, or the Hotline.
