Position Summary :

The Associate Director of Education will lead the strategic planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs for the ASA. This role is integral to the senior staff leadership team and contributes to the organization’s strategic planning process. The Associate Director of Education provides overall strategic and operational leadership for ASA’s CME efforts to include the continuous engagement education plan, targeting various member audiences. Responsibilities include overseeing live and enduring CME activities, including the ASA Annual Meeting, ADVANCE, longitudinal courses, and other CME-eligible products. The Associate Director of Education ensures compliance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) policies and procedures. This position acts as a key member of the senior leadership team, working with the CLO and five department managers to strategically guide the organization.

Primary Position Responsibilities :

  • Lead, direct, and supervise an education team, with direct supervision including the Senior Simulation Education Manager, Education Programs Manager, Senior Managing Editor, and their respective teams.
  • Supervise the development and implementation of a top-tier ASA educational portfolio, encompassing both in-person and enduring education. Ensure all programs comply with ACCME accreditation standards and adhere to adult learning principles.
  • Collaborate with the education team on strategic and tactical planning processes. Maintain education master plan, its updates, and manage the process for unplanned work.
  • Review, evaluate, and improve internal systems, processes, and procedures to enhance workflow, increase efficiency, and ensure seamless operation of the education function. Conduct retrospective reviews for continuous process improvement.
  • Identify emerging trends in medical education and implement innovative learning approaches. Lead pilot projects for new teaching modalities, technologies, and curriculum approaches with external vendors, ensuring DEI initiatives are foundational.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive education continuous engagement strategy and implementation of the plan. Lead all live and enduring CME-related education activities for the organization. Ensure compliance for education with ACCME standards by overseeing the COI process for education made by ASA, ensuring accurate reporting, and implementing necessary changes to maintain compliance. Lead and oversee new techniques, best practices, and approaches to meet accreditation standards.
  • Work with the accreditation manager on ACCME compliance and COI and assists with the 7-year accreditation with commendation effort. Continue strengthening partnerships (Joint Providership) to maintain Continuing Professional Medical Education (CME) accreditation for ASA.
  • Provide fiscal management for the education department to ensure proper utilization of financial resources. Oversee efforts for commercial funding and partnerships, including project management and budget development.
  • Collaborate across ASA with marketing, membership, user experience, guidelines, quality, meetings, publications, and other teams to ensure integrated program development and seamless delivery. Work with PMO and Marketing Insights on research and data collection.
  • Provide support, including planning all education committee meetings. Partner with the Team Lead to develop agendas and conduct effective Steering Committee Meetings. Work closely with member leaders, subject matter experts, and external partners to collaboratively create and improve program content.
  • Manage division operating procedures and administer tools like Atlassian (Jira / Confluence), Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Copilot, and other platforms, including invoicing.

ASA Compensation Philosophy :

Every three years ASA conducts a market analysis of its positions, ensuring the compensation is comparable with jobs of the same level, skills, and abilities. The consulting company, that specializes in medical association compensation, provides recommendations for position placement and salary range updates. Additionally, ASA reviews the organizations pay strategy, and overall pay equity. ASA is committed to equitable pay for all employees, and we strive to be transparent with our pay practices both internally and externally.

Position Compensation :

This position is an exempt / salaried position. The target hiring pay range for this position is : $105,000 to $130,000 annually. This position is not eligible for a yearly bonus / incentive.

Position Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, Curriculum Development, Education Design, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Organizational Development, Business, or related field required.
  • Minimum 9 years’ experience in a related field, including experience managing an educational portfolio. Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience; medical association experience desirable.
  • Knowledge of ACCME requirements required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of organizational governance and structure including working with boards and a variety of standing and ad hoc committees.
  • Skills to actively lead staff teams (both those supervised and in matrix management models) and help ensure the achievement of team and individual goals.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, with a high level of confidence and poise, and a strong service orientation.
  • Budget development capabilities, particularly the ability to develop annual organizational operating budgets and detailed budgets.
  • Leadership ability in regard to helping volunteers and staff set realistic goals and in motivating volunteers and staff to achieve those goals.
