What we want
The Animal Caretaker II position provides animal and facilities care including handling and restraint; operates mechanical equipment; performs minor maintenance repair; and provides occasional student worker supervision.
What you need to know
Salary : Compensation will be commensurate to the selected hire’s experience.
Schedule : May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, and / or on-call duty.
Required Education and Experience :
High School diploma or GED.
Two years of experience in animal care.
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Qualifications :
Experience in animal handling or animal care.
Ability to operate mechanical equipment such as tractor, lawn mower, and weed eater.
General knowledge of repairing maintenance issues such as leaking facets and troughs.
Licenses, Certifications and Registrations
Valid driver license or the ability to obtain State of Texas class "C" vehicle driver license within 45 days of employment.
Responsibilities :
Animal Care : Feeds and waters animals. Monitors feed and hay intake of animals, observes and reports any potential health problems.
Facilities Care : Cleans and disinfects animal housing facilities and feeding equipment at various locations including non-biohazardous facilities, ABS1 and ABSL2 facilities. Operates a vehicle to drive to various work locations. Prepares pens for incoming animals. Disposes of animals' carcasses in prescribed manner.
Animal Handling and Restraint : Assists with animal movements. Assists with restraint of animals for routine vaccinations, deworming, and fecal exams. Assists Investigators with restraining and handling of research animals as needed.
Equipment Use and Maintenance : Operates mechanical equipment (gator, tractor, lawn mower, weed eater, etc). in order to maintain facilities and move animals. Repairs minor maintenance issues (fix leaking facets, leaking trough, etc).
Supervision : Work weekend on a rotating monthly schedule (6 hrs). Occasional weekend supervisor. Ensures students are trained according to Veterinary Medical Park s Standard Operating Procedures.
Other : Performs other duties as assigned.
