Youth Sailing Program Coordinator
Position Type: Seasonal, Full-Time (40 hours/week)
Compensation: starting at $23/hour based on experience
Period of Employment: June 2nd - August 22nd; Monday - Friday (occasional weekend regattas as needed). Additional hourly teaching opportunities may be available.
The Apprenticeshop Youth Summer Sailing programs serve youth ages 6-14, of all skill levels. We offer beginner through advanced sailing programs taught in Club 420s, Optimist Prams and our Apprenticeshop-built wooden Carney 8’ Prams. All programs operate from our unique waterfront campus on Rockland Harbor throughout the summer.
Position Summary: The Apprenticeshop is seeking a Youth Sailing Program Coordinator to join our team of seasonal instructors. The Youth Sailing Program Coordinator is a leadership position that supports and works with a team of sailing instructors to teach sailing to youth in a fun, supportive and safe environment. The ideal candidate has a solid, foundational understanding of seamanship and sailing small boats, is enthusiastic about sharing these skills with young people, and has an attitude that is open to many different techniques and learning styles. The Youth Sailing Program Coordinator models a strong work ethic, values safety and seamanship, and is flexible and willing to assist fellow staff members as needed.
General Responsibilities include but are not be limited to the following:
- Execute preseason rigging of fleet and address repairs/maintenance needs with support from relevant staff. Address end-of-season fleet maintenance needs, prepare and tidy waterfront in preparation for fall programs;
- Plan and supervise 1 week of staff training with instructional team prior to program start;
- Supervise 8 weeks of youth summer sailing programs;
- Maintain a learning environment where participants are encouraged to grow through hands-on positive experiences;
- Ensure that all instructional staff work together to foster a fun and safe learning environment for all participants;
- Communicate effectively with participants’ parents/guardians in person and electronically via registration/program management software, FUNJOIN;
- Maintain sufficient records pertaining to participant incidents, injuries or behavior issues communicate with Program Director and Executive Director as needed for support;
- Participate in coordinating and executing The Apprenticeshop’s annual Red Jacket Youth Regatta and supervise youth participants (August 9, 2025). Supervise (or assign an instructor to supervise) participants in Camden Classic Youth Regatta (July 26, 2025);
- Collaborate with Apprenticeshop staff to address fleet and facility needs;
- Communicate and collaborate with the Program Director to address program and participant needs, review program feedback and develop program materials.
Required Qualifications:
- Interest and enthusiasm for working with and mentoring youth;
Teaching or coaching background; Demonstrated strong small boat sailing and powerboat handling skills;
- Current First Aid/CPR basic certification or Wilderness Responder Training;
Capable of safely lifting 50 lbs and working on unstable surfaces in all weather conditions; Ability to work in a noisy, energetic environment while remaining welcoming to participants and waterfront community members;
- Demonstrates initiative to solve problems, complete projects and work independently or as part of a team with minimal supervision;
- Demonstrates excellent attention to detail and safety through proper seamanship and is committed to passing on skills and knowledge in an open learning environment.
Additional Preferred Qualifications (not required):
- U.S. Sailing Level 1 Instructor certification;
- USCG OUPV license, Yachtmaster Inshore/Offshore or other professionally recognized license.
