Youth Summer Sailing Instructor
Position Type: Seasonal, Hourly
Compensation: starting at $15.00/hr based on experience
Period of Employment: June 16th - August 16th; Monday - Friday (occasional weekend regattas as needed). Flexible, additional hourly teaching opportunities may be available.
The Apprenticeshop Youth Summer Sailing programs serve youth ages 6-14, of all skill levels. We offer beginner through advanced sailing programs taught in Club 420s, Optimist Prams and our Apprenticeshop-built wooden Carney 8’ Prams. All programs operate from our unique waterfront campus on Rockland Harbor throughout the summer. Position Summary: The Apprenticeshop is seeking Youth Sailing Instructors to join our team. Our Youth Sailing Instructors, led by the Youth Sailing Program Coordinator with additional support from the Program Director, work together to teach sailing to youth in a fun, supportive and safe environment. The ideal candidate has a solid, foundational understanding of seamanship and sailing small boats, is enthusiastic about sharing these skills with young people, and has an attitude that is open to many different techniques and learning styles.
General Responsibilities include but are not be limited to the following:
- Supervise and teach a group of up to 25 youth sailors (ages 6-14) per session;
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants;
- Plan and teach on-the-water lessons and shoreside activities that develop a love of sailing and the ocean and additionally foster teamwork, confidence and kind, respectful behavior towards fellow sailors;
- Plan foul weather activities that maintain a focus on sailing techniques, seamanship education, and safety;
- Keep thorough attendance and incident records and communicate as needed with Youth Sailing Program Coordinator for support;
- Maintain Apprenticeshop fleet; includes keeping chase boats fueled and clean, inspecting sailing fleet daily, making small repairs as needed, reporting maintenance needs to Youth Sailing Program Coordinator and relevant staff;
- Maintain program facilities; includes ensuring Bosun’s Locker, pavilion and waterfront are tidy and functional for program needs.
Required Qualifications:
- Interest and enthusiasm for working with and mentoring youth;
- Demonstrated strong small boat sailing and powerboat handling skills;
- Capable of safely lifting 50 lbs and working on unstable surfaces in all weather conditions;
- Ability to work in a noisy, energetic environment while remaining welcoming to participants and waterfront community members;
- Demonstrates excellent attention to detail and safety through proper seamanship and is committed to passing on skills and knowledge in an open learning environment.
Additional Preferred Qualifications (not required):
- Teaching or coaching experience;
- Current First Aid/CPR basic certification or Wilderness Responder Training;
- U.S. Sailing Level 1 Instructor certification.
