Pottery Wheel Throwing Instructors Needed at New Giant Studio

The Clay Hole
Draper, UT Full Time
POSTED ON 1/22/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 3/20/2025

THE JOB:
I am looking for someone who can work 3-5 nights per week teaching beginner's wheel pottery classes in the evenings (Mon-Fri for now). We have classes every night 6:30-10:00pm, you'll need to be here 6:00-10:30pm. This job will officially start the first week of March. Each night, there will likely be 10-17 people on the wheel, and another 33-40 people on the hand-building side.

Read below if you're interested in other ways of exchanging studio space/time for helping out during classes.

WHO I AM AND WHAT IS THE CLAY HOLE:
My name is Dan Pearce. Millions follow me on social media for my pottery. I have a private studio and have been running a couple classes myself the last few years, and I am now opening a MASSIVE pottery and art studio in Draper called The Clay Hole.

This new pottery studio is the most loaded state-of-the-art pottery studio you'll ever walk into. More than 500 different commercial glazes, thousands of tools, lounge areas, game areas, artist workshops, etc, and the whole things is just going to be... epic. If you love pottery, having access to the studio is reason enough to take the job.

What I need from you:

  • I need you to be seasoned on the pottery wheel (with various forms and speed), able to throw up to 4-5 lbs at least with ease.
  • I need you to be able to throw several different common wheel forms.
  • I need you to be able to pinpoint quickly problems with students' throwing and instruct them how to improve.
  • Every night we will have one instructor on the pottery wheel side and one on the hand-building side.
  • I need you to be an awesome and helpfully charismatic personality who isn't afraid to jump in, converse, instruct, guide, and keep the community aspect of my classes strong. The communities we build in these classes is everything.
  • I need you to be reliable.
  • I need you to be available from 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM (sometimes you'll be there a little later as students wrap-up) Monday through Friday. Optionally, if a couple more part-time people are the right fit, we can do 2-3 nights per week.
  • I need you to be honest. Always. Without fail.
  • I need you to have a deep love and passion for pottery and ceramics, especially the pottery wheel.
  • I need you to enjoy and thrive in a laid back community environment. This isn't your grandma's pottery studio. Students bring (ahem) beverages to share, there aren't a lot of language filters, etc.
  • I need you to be tough, yet smart about it. To keep my studio awesome, you've gotta constantly instruct students what they need to do better and stop them from doing things they shouldn't. I've got over half a mil invested into this new studio, and keeping it in perfect order is a must.
  • I need you to be okay with less glamorous work, too. This includes coming early to clean the bathrooms, occasionally cleaning my wheel, mopping, cleaning slop buckets, helping with grunge work, etc....All the things that have to be done to keep a pottery studio awesome.

I'm looking for someone who can start teaching the first week of March. It's important/crucial you're there for the first nights of each class every single month when new students come in.

IF YOU'RE INTERESTED:

Submit an application and a note telling me about you and your experience with pottery. If I think you'll be a good fit, we'll have a FaceTime interview. If you still seem like a good fit, I'll need you to come in for a second interview and to show me that you have proficiency in the studio and in a teaching scenario.

THINK LONG-TERM:

I prefer to keep my employees as long as possible. My hope is that this job will last years. If you know you are only in it for the short-term, please don't apply.

PERKS:

As my employee, you will have access to the studio for your own personal projects when you are off the clock. On top of that, once classes are rolling and students are doing their own thing, there is usually plenty of time to work on your own stuff during class.

If you are really good, and create truly amazing things, I'm happy to help you sell your projects through my social media for side cash. Even though I would take 50% as a gallery fee, you'll still make far more with my following than you would selling at art fairs or flea markets.

BONUSES & RAISES:

I do up pay constantly for my employees the longer they work for me and when times are great I give bonuses.

WANT TO BE PART OF THIS WITHOUT TAKING A COMMITTED JOB?

During each class, I would like to have 1-2 members who are there to throw their own pieces, and also there to jump in and help other students learn the pottery wheel process when the instructor is tied up. In exchange for that, I'll be giving these people full membership to The Clay Hole.

COMING FROM ANOTHER POTTERY STUDIO?

I bet you'd agree that the more experienced potters in a class the better it is for everyone. If you can show me proof that you're currently a member or instructor at another pottery studio, I will give you your first month absolutely free if you'll come join us starting in March. That's how much faith I have that you'll never want to do pottery anywhere else!
