Job Summary
The Summer Director at the Edward J. Madden Open Hearts Camp is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the summer camp programming. The Open Hearts Camp is the world's first and longest running summer camp for kids who have survived open heart surgery and procedures.
The Summer Director oversees and supervises all staff, including, but not limited to, counselors, volunteers, chef, nurses, and support staff (maintenance). The Summer Director ensures the safety of campers and staff through: session planning, emergency preparedness, emergency decision making, camper intake and end of session camper pick up, staff training and supervision, camp transportation, facilities safety checks, and off-camp trip leadership. The Summer Director is in charge of understanding who is on camp property at all times. The Summer Director is an on-site position during the summer camp operations and must be on-site and available 24/7 when campers are present at the camp.
If the Summer Director needs to leave the camp during operations for any reason they will work with the Executive Director and at least one local board member to have a chain of command presence on camp property. The Summer Director works under the supervision of the Executive Director and the Board of Directors. The Summer Director and Executive Director collaborate on camper and staffing developments, needs, disciplinary actions, and family communication.
Duties
- Develop and implement engaging camp programs that promote education and personal growth. Focus on safety with the nature of pediatric heart surgery campers.
- Supervise and train camp staff, providing guidance and support to ensure high-quality programming.
- Foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere for campers, encouraging participation and teamwork.
- Maintain communication with parents and guardians regarding camper progress and camp activities.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and policies, conducting regular safety drills.
- Manage daily operations of the camp, including scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation.
- Collaborate with educational institutions to incorporate curriculum-based activities into the camp experience.
- Evaluate program effectiveness through feedback from campers, parents, and staff.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Education Administration, recreation, health sciences or a related field preferred.
- Experience working with camps, and/or medical or special needs camp settings is highly desirable.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire staff and campers alike.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail in planning activities and managing schedules.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people including campers, parents, and staff.
- Passion for education and youth development, with a commitment to creating a safe and fun environment.
