Who We Are: Founded by Michigan survivors to create a lasting memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, The Zekelman Holocaust Center (“The HC”) is guided by its mission to engage, educate, and empower by remembering the Holocaust. The Center is one of the largest and oldest Holocaust museums in the United States and we have welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors to our museum. Our 55,000 square foot facility is home to our newly renovated multi-million-dollar permanent exhibit featuring our extensive collection of survivor testimonies, artifacts, archival documents, paintings, and films, an authentic boxcar, and a sapling from the tree located outside Anne Frank’s hiding place window that is described in her diary. Embedded in the community, the Center is home to over fifty trained staff members. Our robust Education Department offers school and adult groups customized tours, educational workshops, and professional development training programs. Guests are empowered to apply the lessons learned to create a compassionate society where people take responsible action.
Summary of Responsibilities: The role of the Education Specialist will align the Holocaust education provided by The HC with best educational practices in curricular design and implementation to oversee the quality of museum tours and Next Generation Speakers. This position requires a background in teaching and instructional design, as well as excellent stewardship and communication skills.
Portfolio Responsibilities:
  • Provide coaching and training to Education Associates, Museum Educators, Docents, and Next Generation Speakers on their tours and presentations
  • Coordinate stewardship and professional development opportunities for volunteer Docents and Next Generation Speakers
  • Coordinate the training and onboarding of new Education Department team members
  • Plan and facilitate workshops for education professionals
Provide coaching and training to Education Associates, Museum Educators, Docents, and Next Generation Speakers on their tours and presentations
  • Regularly follow the Education Associates, Museum Educators, and Docent tours to provide constructive and actionable feedback and maintain a level of accuracy and professionalism for all HC tours
  • Regularly listen to Next Generation presentations to provide constructive and actionable feedback
  • Create and design systems needed to evaluate facilitator performance
  • Coordinate with the Operations Department on scheduling of tours and speakers
Coordinate stewardship and professional development opportunities for volunteer Docents and Next Generation Speakers
  • Work with the Director of Education to provide continuing education to volunteer docents and Next Generation speakers
  • Maintain a calendar for regular engagement and professional growth activities for docents and Next Generation speakers
  • Assist with the planning and execution of the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon
  • Coordinate stewardship for docents and Next Generation speakers, including birthday and lifecycle cards, regular update emails, etc.
Coordinate the training and onboarding of new Education Department team members
  • Work with the Director of Education to design and implement a comprehensive onboarding and training schedule for all new Education Department team members
  • Coordinate and maintain the training calendar for onboarding new educators
  • Participate in the training of new educators, specifically with the design of their tours and facilitation and pedagogical techniques
Plan and facilitate workshops for education professionals
  • Design and facilitate professional development for teachers and workshops for pre-service teachers with support from the Content Team
  • Facilitate tours and other content related programs
  • All duties as assigned
Requirements:
  • BA in Holocaust history or relevant social science degrees, MA preferred
  • Education and research background in the Holocaust
  • Teaching experience in Holocaust education appreciated
  • Lead with a positive demeanor and a willing-to-assist attitude
  • Possesses strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills, both written and oral.
  • Excellent public speaking, presentation, and listening skills
  • Independently motivated and detail-oriented
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
  • The ability to work productively with people of different backgrounds and perspectives
  • Additional evening and Sunday shifts with advanced notice
