Position: Front Desk/Adoption Counselor
Reports to: Adoption Manager/ Shelter Manager
Classification: Part time hourly
Pay rate: $13.50
Summary: The role of the Adoption Counselor is to greet the public, help manage the front desk (phones, etc…), assist potential adopters and assist in the adoption process utilizing a computerized system.
Duties:
- Assess prospective adopters and their selected animal(s) for appropriateness according to prescribed guidelines – the goal being an adoption in both the animal’s and adopter’s best interest
- Record all transactions involving adopted animals in the Shelter Database – including issuing receipts according to prescribed procedures
- Counsels adopting persons about shelter rules with respect to spaying/neutering, and informs them of health inspections and other participating veterinary services available
- Returns all phone messages
- Provides customer assistance to Shelter visitors in the kennel areas when not engaged in other activities
- Assures that the front desk is manned during all hours open to the public
- Refers questions about non-routine circumstances and all disgruntled customers to the Team Leader, Adoption Manager or Shelter Manager
- Refers questions from customers about animal heath, maintenance and feeding to the customer’s veterinarian
- Other duties as assigned by the Team Leader, Adoption Manager, Shelter Manager and/or Executive Director
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work well with customers, volunteers and staff
- Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the safe handling of dogs and cats
- Demonstrates strong ability to utilize a PC data base throughout the adoption process
- Can lift up to 40 pounds
- Agreement with and dedication to the mission of the Humane Society of Genesee County
