Legal Aid seeks a Human Resources Generalist who leads initiatives in recruitment, onboarding, employee development, benefits administration, and employee relations, while providing expert support and guidance to managers, supervisors, and staff. This role is instrumental in fostering an inclusive, engaging, and high-performing work environment. Human Resources Generalist reports to the Director of Diversity, People, and Culture, and works collaboratively with an HR Coordinator and Assistant, this position strikes a balance between consultative and operational responsibilities. Responsibilities will include:
Recruitment, Onboarding & Orientation
- Develops and implements recruiting plans, tools and innovative sourcing strategies to leverage diverse high caliber candidates
- Manages the hiring process and monitors requisition status to ensure an efficient recruiting process
- Design and deliver comprehensive orientation and onboarding programs to integrate new hires effectively and align them with organizational culture and goals.
Performance Management, Learning, Development and Recognition
- Lead, implement, and continuously evaluate performance management processes to ensure alignment with organizational goals, supporting managers in providing regular feedback and performance appraisals.
- Coordinate and track employee learning and development initiatives to support skill enhancement, professional growth, and succession planning, ensuring programs meet both individual and organizational needs.
- Oversee the rewards and recognition programs, ensuring effective acknowledgment of employee contributions, fostering a positive culture of appreciation, and supporting retention and engagement strategies.
Planning Support
- Supports use of HRIS System and other records management and use of data in planning and implementation of HR programs
- Generates and maintains HR related reports for use by Management and Board.
- Recommends changes to personnel policies.
Benefit Administration
- Responsible for employee benefits administration, including yearly benefits open enrollment, communication with staff, and vendors, employee changes, and ongoing guidance to employees regarding healthcare benefits.
- Works with employees and management to educate, create, process, and maintain all aspects related to Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), personal leave of absences, and reasonable accommodation requests.
Employee Relations
- Participates as a leader in promoting a diverse, inclusive, equitable, and belonging organization.
- Promotes an inclusive workplace by advising managers and supervisors on employee relations issues, including conflict resolution, attendance, performance improvement, interpretation and enforcement of HR policies.
- Responsible for offboarding activities including (but not limited to) conducting and analyzing exit interviews.
- Conducts internal investigations.
- Creates and implements employee engagement plans and activities.

Compliance
- Maintain all employee records in a confidential manner.
- Responsible for compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Mentors and provides direction to HR Coordinator.
- Delegates tasks and projects to HR Coordinator

The Successful Candidate will possess:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field or commensurate experience required.
- 5 years’ experience in human resources required.
- PHR, SPHR or other HR certification required.
- Experience working in a union environment, in a legal services and/or non-profit environment preferred.
- Knowledge and understanding of employment laws, practices, compliance, and legal requirements.
- Strong technology skills, including in HRIS, MS Office, Windows, and databases. Strong knowledge of Paycor HRIS preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including attentiveness to cultural needs and differences.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail required.
- Ability to prioritize and effectively handle multiple tasks.
Compensation & Benefits: The salary range for the Human Resources Generalist is $68,000 to $102,000 DOE. The top third of Legal Aid’s salary ranges are reserved for those with deep skill sets, long tenure, and consistent exceptional performance. In addition, Legal Aid offers an exceptional benefits package including healthcare, life and disability insurance, and retirement savings plan with up to 13% employer contribution.
