Job Summary
The Child Care Provider at The Lighthouse is responsible for creating a safe, nurturing, and structured environment for children residing at the domestic violence shelter. This role involves providing direct care, engaging children in age-appropriate activities, and supporting their emotional well-being while their parent(s) participate in shelter programs and services.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and engage children in structured and free-play activities that promote social, emotional, and cognitive development.
- Ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment in the child care space.
- Provide trauma-informed care and respond to children's emotional and behavioral needs with patience and understanding.
- Plan and implement age-appropriate educational and recreational activities, including arts and crafts, storytelling, music, and outdoor play.
- Support children in developing healthy coping skills and social interactions.
- Maintain open and supportive communication with parents/guardians regarding their child's experiences and needs.
- Observe and document children's behavior, progress, and any concerns, reporting to appropriate staff as necessary.
- Assist with meals and snacks, following any dietary restrictions or allergies.
- Uphold confidentiality and respect the privacy of shelter residents.
- Collaborate with shelter staff and external service providers to ensure comprehensive support for families.
- Follow all shelter policies and procedures regarding safety, security, and emergency protocols.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum of one year of experience working with children, preferably in a shelter, child care, or social services setting.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care and child development principles.
- Ability to handle stressful situations with professionalism, empathy, and patience.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
- Ability to pass a background check and meet all state licensing requirements for child care providers.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, and engage in physical activities with children.
