Montgomery Parks is seeking a capable leader and conservation-oriented person to lead on-the-ground management of high-quality natural areas and community-based conservation projects primarily through the control of non-native invasive plants and planting of native species. In addition to being willing and able to learn new skills, the candidate should be willing to work outdoors in the weather, uneven terrain, and other associated outdoor factors.
Under supervision of the Department’s Vegetation Ecologist, the incumbent coordinates and leads the day-to-day activities of the Vegetation Ecology Field Crew. In coordination with the Vegetation Ecologist, the incumbent will plan, schedule, assign and monitor work of the field crew including the management of non-native invasive plants, natural areas management and restoration, and native plantings. This job includes the use of mechanical, chemical, and hand-tools, as well as park vehicles and off road-equipment (UTVs, ATVs, Tractors). This is a supervisory position that oversees one additional employee, at present.
- Provides leadership and coordination of day-to-day vegetation management by field staff. Assigns, monitors work, and provides technical assistance to resolve problems. Participates in employee selections, performance evaluations, and other personnel matters in coordination with Vegetation Ecologists. Inspects work quantity and quality of assigned workers.
- Leads workers on non-native invasive plant control and native plantings.
- Safe use and oversight of power equipment such as chainsaws and brush cutters.
- Follow best management practices for herbicide control of non-native invasive species
- Leads workers on herbicide application techniques and equipment use.
- Supervision of field crew staff in the execution of habitat maintenance.
- Follow best management practices for equipment maintenance and cleaning.
- Interaction with volunteers when working on community-conservation projects.
- Trailering equipment necessary for field work.
- Post appropriate on-site signage for field work according to Montgomery County Regulations.
- Use of handheld GIS applications.
- As directed by supervisor, maintains, prepares, and initiates records. Keeps inventory and supply records.

Working Conditions:
Primarily works outside. May be required to work weekends, evenings, and holidays. Exposed to weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (for example, bees, hornets, wasps, etc.). Some pressure to meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of invasive species control methods and/or using chemical and mechanical means for vegetation management.
- General competency, or ability to become trained for personal computer use including Microsoft Suite; familiarity with, or ability to become capable of using GIS handheld applications, on-the-job training available/provided.
- Previous experience in conservation or natural resources related field.
1. High school graduate or GED, and five years of progressively responsible experience in grounds maintenance, building maintenance, and park maintenance; or
2. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
3. Pass Commission medical examination.
4. Valid driver's license.
5. Additionally, contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may require:
a. Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements upon appointment, or the ability to acquire one within six months.
b. Maryland Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator's certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment.
c. Certification by the National Playground Safety Institute.
