JOB SUMMARY*
The Kitchen Resource Advocate will perform a wide variety of duties relating to working with poverty and vulnerable populations. This team member will work in a homeless shelter system that provides emergency shelter to 300 individuals in the Midvale Family Resource Center nightly. In addition to serving as part of the Family Advocate team, the Kitchen Resource Advocate will have a specialized focus on duties regarding kitchen cleanliness, food storage, and nutrition.

JOB DUTIES*
Advocate Duties:
- Provide quality customer service to our guests, who may need resources in addition to a warm bed for the night.
- Observe and help regulate activities at the shelter, ensuring rules and procedures are followed.
- Provide clear and specific information to guests and instruct them of shelter rules/procedures.
- Assist in maintaining a clean and safe facility, identifying special needs, and referring needs to supervisor.
- Assist in resolving conflicts which may arise among guests.
- Write incident reports where appropriate, maintain records of guest stays, and maintain accurate shelter log.
- Answer phones, take messages, and respond to the public.
- Provide occasional crisis intervention and emergency interface with community resources such as EMS and law enforcement.
- Collaborate with case managers and other staff who each have roles in helping our guests to step out of homelessness.
- Operate as part of a team that strives to serve families experiencing homelessness in our community.
- Complete food orders and pick up food orders weekly from Bishop’s Storehouse
Kitchen and Pantry Duties
- Maintain cleanliness of kitchen and dayroom areas.
- Complete daily checks on food storage.
- Ensure food is stored properly and labeled correctly.
- Coordinate food locker assignments to new shelter guests.
- Collaborate with external agencies in educating families on nutrition.
- Collaborate with Midvale Operations Supervisor.
- Collaborate with Volunteer Coordinator.

- Demonstrates awareness and desire to understand diverse populations
- Ability to contribute to the Agency’s commitment to enhancing awareness and appreciation
- Willingness to understand that housing first, harm reduction, low barrier access to resources is best practice and essential to our mission at The Road Home.
- Ability to set and maintain good boundaries, using Trauma-Informed Care as a guideline

Requirements
Education and Experience
- Experience working with diverse populations preferred.
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Position will require a food handler’s permit, can be obtained upon hiring

- Excellent customer service skills.
- Excellent writing and documentation skills.
- Willing to be a proactive member of a team.
- Ability to work from a Trauma-Informed Care framework.
- Familiarity with the Housing First philosophy.

- Self-starter and self-directed.
- Ability to accept direction from Supervisor.
- Excellent organizational skills and strong computer skills.
- Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to diverse populations. Ability to contribute to the agency’s commitment to enhancing awareness and appreciation of diverse ethnic and cultural heritages.
- Have a valid driver’s license
- Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
Physical and Equipment Requirements
- Ability to lift 25 pounds.
- Ability to stand and walk for at least an hour at a time.
- Ability to drive a vehicle.
