Part-Time High School Science Teacher 60% FTE The Sharon Academy High School is seeking a qualified, part-time science teacher who is excited to teach an integrated, proficiency-based biology and 9th-grade science methods curriculum. We are seeking a candidate who is eager to fulfill responsibilities in the following areas: Teaching and Learning Employ current, proficiency-based practices of teaching and assessment. Update course syllabus and class description (for Program of Studies) as requested annually. Engage in School-Based and Individual Professional Development that aligns with the mission of TSA as well as individual professional growth and specific teaching goals. Provide Tier 1 and Tier 2 Academic support in class and during Phoenix Block periods. Stay up-to-date on current 504s, Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and Educational Support Plans (ESPs) as found in TSA’s Blackbaud Learning Platform (BBd) and through direct communication from the Director of Academic Services (DAS). Faculty need to be aware of what students have plans and their faculty responsibilities for meeting those plans. Faculty are asked to adjust the curriculum, teaching, and assignments accordingly, with the support of the DAS. Participate annually in the faculty evaluation process, based on universal and self-identified criteria to be shared by the end of the previous academic year. Attend required IEP or 504 Meetings that might be scheduled before and after school. Flexibility during non-teaching time outside of scheduled class/prep times is an important part of being a member of the TSA adult community. As needed, this time may involve supporting school programming, conferencing/meetings, and community building (during school hours) in support of The Sharon Academy's mission. Examples of this include: special musical performances, plays, film screenings, Career Day, Winter Carnival, Orientation Program, and Field Day. Develop and implement consistent classroom routines that establish clear expectations and are aligned with the school’s Universal Expectations. Create and maintain a visually stimulating classroom environment, which includes using at least one bulletin board space for each classroom that regularly displays student work or visuals related to classroom learning. Clear communication with families regarding student progress/behavior in class via feedback in Blackbaud and via email communication when necessary. If a family requests or requires more communication than reasonably expected, or the scope of concern is greater than one class, the student and family should be referred to the advisor first and then SST for case management. Faculty are to keep student grades updated in the Blackbaud Learning Platform as follows: Any assignment given to the students must be in BBd by the end of the day it is assigned. Assignments, corresponding feedback, and grades must appear for students in each class within two weeks of collecting the assignment. Work should be marked as missing, collected, or graded within 2 days of the due date. Take daily attendance in BBd Generate report cards and comments for all students each year and meet the agreed-upon report card comment deadlines to support the timely dissemination of report cards. Core Classes will include written comments for Q2 and Q4. Electives will require comments for Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4. As of March 2025, faculty will record positive notes and infractions in BBd by the end of the day (universal expectation violations and excessive time out of class) Participate in critical information-gathering surveys. Manage or co-manage and grade an interim committee. Faculty Employment Expectations Full-time teachers (100%) teach the equivalent of 4 core classes (20% FTE each) for 80% FTE and 3 elective classes at 15% FTE (5%) each and serve as Advisors at 5% FTE. Faculty serving as advisors are responsible for the following: Meeting 1-2x a week with advisory group Communicating information to students and parents as requested or needed. This includes but is not limited to missing classes or Phoenix Block (PB), moderate behavior, or social-emotional trends. If a family requests or requires more communication than reasonably expected, or the scope of concern is greater than what the advisor can support, the student and family should be referred to SST/HOS. Informing staff of critical updates on advisees via Kid talk and SST Serving as liaison with support personnel, attendance, advisory, and Phoenix Block callbacks Reaching out to families if kids are missing classes or Phoenix Block Two conferences a year per student, which include scheduling, holding, recording notes in BBd, and following up on critical information. Thorough report card reading and reviewing on designated days. Faculty working less than full time should be available for apportioned and appropriate amounts of time. 100% FTE Faculty will be present at school through Elective/Afternoon Programming until 3:15 pm. Faculty work according to the school calendar and the daily schedule. This includes all teaching days and all scheduled in-service days, plus school events as outlined below. 100% FTE Faculty Salaries are based on a 37.5-hour work week with expected availability between 8:00 am and 3:30 pm. Faculty should make themselves available to students and families before and after school as needed. Serve as an exhibition/capstone mentor for up to four students during the school year. Evaluate 11th and 12th-grade Exhibition/Capstone presentations at the high school level. Follow all policies and procedures as stated in the Employee Handbook and the Student Handbook. All Faculty are Mandatory Reporters as required by the state of Vermont. Collaboration and Planning Meet with other teachers, as necessary, to coordinate curriculum or discuss student concerns. Attend all staff meetings and department meetings, including “report card reading” days, regularly and as scheduled, and participate in faculty meetings and in-service days to the contracted percentage. Participate in required Department Meetings to discuss matters including but not limited to proficiency benchmarks, scope and sequence, department budget planning, and sharing best practices. Fulfill any summer reading obligations as requested by Administrative Leadership. Independent School Culture Support the mission of The Sharon Academy. Attend the beginning of the year potluck, information nights, a minimum of one evening Interim performance, all-school field trips, graduation, and at least two other school-related events such as Prom, Phoenix Phest, and Senior Dinner. Faculty substituting for another teacher is included as one of the details supporting the mission, so long as the teacher has volunteered, and the substitute work does not directly prohibit or interfere with other duties. Please refer to more information regarding staff absences under PTO/Vacation Time under section VII. Faculty are asked to try and respond to emails within 24 hours during the academic week, with any of the following responses: 1) Answer the question, 2) Acknowledge you received the email and will respond as soon as possible, 3) Respond by saying you are passing the email on to the relevant person to follow up. Actively help in keeping the school a clean, healthy, and safe environment. Teaching Qualifications: Teachers must hold a teaching license or be qualified, through education and/or experience, to teach the subject(s) for which they are hired to teach. Such qualifications must be approved by the Independent School Consultant at the Vermont Agency of Education.
