Job Description

The Staff Pad is looking for a Project Estimator in the DFW Area, Texas. We have partnered with a construction company that specializes in commercial construction like retail, restaurants, offices and industrial sites. They take pride in delivering peace of mind to their clients as they are partners from beginning to end.

As a Project Estimator at PGP Construction, you will play a critical role in ensuring the success of all commercial construction projects by preparing accurate and comprehensive cost estimates during the preconstruction phase. You will be responsible for evaluating project documents, performing material take-offs, soliciting subcontractor bids, and developing detailed cost projections for labor, materials, and other expenses. Your ability to provide accurate, competitive, and timely estimates will be essential in helping secure new projects, as well as ensuring profitability and efficient project execution.

In addition to preparing cost estimates, you will collaborate closely with the project management, design, and operations teams to evaluate project requirements, assess risks, and recommend cost-effective solutions. This role requires a keen attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to interpret complex construction plans and specifications. You will work closely with the senior leadership and project teams to ensure the estimates align with the company’s standards and expectations.

Key Responsibilities :

Estimate Preparation and Cost Analysis :

  • Prepare Detailed Project Estimates : Review project plans, specifications, and bid documents to develop accurate and comprehensive cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor work.
  • Material Take-offs : Perform detailed quantity take-offs from construction drawings to determine the materials and labor needed for each project. Ensure that estimates are thorough, and account for all potential costs.
  • Pricing : Research and gather up-to-date pricing information for materials, labor, and subcontractor services. Develop accurate pricing models based on historical data and current market trends.
  • Cost Breakdown : Provide detailed breakdowns of project costs, including direct and indirect costs, for each trade or subcontractor, and ensure that all potential costs are considered.

Collaboration with Project Teams :

  • Work with Project Managers and Superintendents : Collaborate with the project management team to ensure that the estimate aligns with the project’s scope and any potential challenges or constraints. Help assess risk factors that may impact project costs and schedule.
  • Coordinate with Subcontractors and Suppliers : Obtain and evaluate subcontractor and supplier bids, ensuring that they meet project specifications and provide accurate cost estimates. Build relationships with key subcontractors and suppliers to ensure competitive pricing and reliable services.
  • Consult with Design Teams : Work closely with architects, engineers, and other design professionals to clarify project scope, identify potential cost-saving opportunities, and ensure that estimates are aligned with design intent.
  • Bid Proposal and Documentation :

  • Prepare Bid Packages : Develop and prepare bid proposals, including all necessary documentation such as scope of work, cost estimates, contract terms, and project schedules. Ensure all bid documents are complete, accurate, and submitted on time.
  • Review and Analyze Bids : Review and evaluate incoming bids from subcontractors and vendors, ensuring that they are competitive and compliant with the project’s scope and specifications. Present bid analysis to senior management for final decisions.
  • Provide Recommendations : Based on bid analysis and cost estimates, recommend the best course of action for procuring subcontractor services, materials, and equipment for the project.
  • Cost Control and Risk Management :

  • Risk Analysis : Identify and assess potential risks to project costs, schedule, and scope during the estimating process. Work with project teams to develop strategies to mitigate these risks and keep the project within budget.
  • Cost Impact of Design Changes : Assess the cost impact of any changes in design or scope during the project’s lifecycle. Prepare change order estimates and support the project team in obtaining approval from owners and clients for cost adjustments.
  • Continuous Improvement :

  • Improve Estimating Processes : Continuously evaluate and refine estimating procedures to improve accuracy, efficiency, and competitiveness. Stay up to date with industry trends, construction materials, and labor rates.
  • Maintain Estimating Databases : Ensure that estimating data, including labor rates, material costs, and subcontractor pricing, is regularly updated and maintained to reflect current market conditions.
  • Preconstruction Support :

  • Preconstruction Meetings : Participate in preconstruction meetings to review project scope, budget, and schedule with the project management team, owners, and other stakeholders. Provide feedback and support for the successful execution of the project.
  • Assist with Value Engineering : Collaborate with the project team and client to explore cost-saving opportunities and value engineering solutions without compromising the quality or integrity of the project.
  • Project Handoff :

  • Ensure Smooth Transition to Project Team : Provide comprehensive project estimates, budgets, and cost data to the project management team upon project award. Ensure a smooth transition from preconstruction to the construction phase.
  • Monitor Project Performance : Work with project teams to monitor project costs during construction, ensuring that actual costs align with initial estimates and taking corrective actions when necessary.
  • Qualifications :

  • Experience : 5-10 years of experience in commercial construction estimating. Experience with a variety of project types (e.g., office buildings, retail, healthcare, industrial) is preferred.
  • Education : Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field (preferred), or equivalent work experience in estimating.
  • Certifications : LEED AP, Estimating Certification, or other relevant certifications (preferred).
  • Skills :
  • Strong understanding of construction processes, project scope, and specifications.
  • Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., ProEst, Sage Estimating, On-Screen Takeoff) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word).
  • Ability to perform material take-offs and calculate labor costs accurately.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with subcontractors, clients, and internal teams.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate project plans and identify cost-saving opportunities.
