The State of New Hampshire, Department of Environmental Services, Air Resources Division, Permitting & Environmental Health Bureau has a full time vacancy for a Risk Assessor

Summary:

Supervises program activities assessing existing and potential human health risks associated with exposure to existing or potential environmental contamination, as well as formulating recommendations and guidance for reduction and mitigation of risks resulting from environmental hazards. Maintains an effective collaborative working relationship with department administrators, as well as state and federal agencies.

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS : Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education : Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university with major study in environmental health, public health, toxicology, epidemiology, chemistry, biology, or a closely related biological or chemical sciences field. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

Experience : Six years’ experience as an Environmental Engineer or an Environmentalist conducting human health risk assessments and performing related duties for a public or private environmental health organization, with responsibility for program management, research, planning, monitoring and evaluation, two years of which shall have involved supervisory duties as well as the preparation of various environmental documents, legal briefs or related research.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION : Eligibility for a NH driver’s license .

Responsibilities:

Researches technical literature, attends technical conferences, and reviews and evaluates compiled environmental sampling data, reports, remedial investigations, and feasibility studies from state and federal agencies to identify whether chemical contaminants pose a human health risk and to assist in the development of human health policies for NH DES .

Coordinates and conducts environmental health studies, using computer models, to identify populations at risk of exposure to environmental contamination.

Designs and supervises highly technical, comprehensive multi-media assessments of the effects of environmental contamination on human populations in order to develop recommendations for risk reduction strategies.

Reviews, analyzes and evaluates technical data summaries from a variety of NH DES programs, scientific reports, and government documents to determine the human health risk of exposure to environmental pollutants; Upon request, develops and proposes revisions to program policies and rules for consideration by the appropriate bureau Administrator.

Formulates health-based standards for the management of hazardous substances in drinking water. Advises DES staff who investigate, monitor, and regulate groundwater and drinking water contamination regarding exposure and risk from hazardous substances in water supplies. Integrates information from all sources to develop protective health based drinking water standards. Communicates recommendations to department administrators, municipal officials and the public.

Periodically reviews ambient groundwater quality standards or maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) to determine whether new research warrants revising the current standards. Develops and makes recommendations for ambient groundwater quality standards or MCLs for contaminants of emerging concern or to address necessary revisions of existing standards.

Collaborates with other NH DES regulatory programs and US EPA staff to develop strategies for assessing risks, monitoring contaminants, and recommending possible courses of action for mitigation and control of exposure.

Represents NH DES as a risk assessment expert in court proceedings, legislative hearings, adoption of standards, rule and policy development. Presents potential human health effects information at public meetings.

Continually seeks to improve practices to add quality and value in support of the Department's mission while identifying and eliminating unnecessary or redundant actions.
